"Drawing," declared the early writers on art, "is the foundation, the father of all the other arts." It was, in their eyes, the expression of an intriguing and refined interior world and the most direct outlet for the initial illumination of artistic creativity. Drawing is the theme of the Istituto Bancario San Paolo`s art volume for this year. It is the first in a set of three volumes edited by Professor Gianni Carlo Sciolla, a regular lecturer in the history of art criticism at the Universities of Udine and Turin, and comprises contributions by several eminent specialists in the field. This three-year appointment with Drawing is part of the "developing continuity" characterising our publishing policy, and reflects the growth of the Sanpaolo itself and its rapid rise to achieving world dimensions. Our publications, initiated forty years ago as a window on Piedmont`s artistic heritage (which was sorely overlooked in those days), gradually moved outside the region`s boundaries to embrace other parts of Italy and other cultural institutions and phenomena of international standing.
