Nata a Firenze da una famiglia di industriali ebrei emigrati negli Stati Uniti per sfuggire alle leggi razziali fasciste, Simone Forti è un'artista del movimento, come ama definirsi. La sua formazione nella danza inizia nel 1955 a San Francisco, dove partecipa agli innovativi laboratori di Anna Halprin e conosce un modo nuovo di ballare e costruire la coreografia, liberata di ogni elemento non essenziale e aperta all'improvvisazione. A New York, quattro anni dopo, avviene l'incontro decisivo con Robert Dunn, che la introduce alla lezione di John Cage sull'indeterminatezza e la libertà espressiva. In città sono gli anni degli happening, di Fluxus e del Judson Dance Theater. I primi risultati della sua ricerca, presentati nel 1960 alla Reuben Gallery, sono già un'anticipazione di quelle che più avanti chiamerà Dance Constructions. Forti sviluppa performance di una semplicità estrema che implicano quasi esclusivamente l'uso di corde, scatole e strutture di legno grezzo. I movimenti degli interpreti richiedono uno sforzo che è spesso privo di scopo o servono a sperimentare le possibilità di azione del corpo nelle situazioni ludiche dell'infanzia. È il caso di See Saw, performata da Robert Morris, all'epoca suo marito, e Yvonne Rainer, in azione alle due estremità di un gioco a dondolo.
