Fotografie
Vintage reference photograph of actor Larry J. Blake from the 1938 film, with a mimeo snipe on the verso. From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones. Born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901, Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935, where he worked well into the 1950s. Based on the short story "If You Break My Heart" by Steve Fisher. Sally Eilers stars as a nurse, whose brother, shortly after being released from prison, is shot and killed in a shootout between a criminal gang and the police. Larry J. Blake, a police officer, is accused of shooting him but knows he didn't do it, and sets out to prove it, both to clear his name and because of his feelings for Eilers. Set in New York City. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First edition. Illustrated by John Wentworth. A little foxing, still fine in a very good plus dustwrapper with a little age-toning, and a tiny tear. Nicely Inscribed by Simon to author James Jones: "Sat. May, 12, 1951. To Jimmy Jones, A hard-headed writer, with a conscience, composed of integrity, self-consciousness and respect. Best regards, S. Sylvan Simon." Simon began as a theatre and radio instructor, then became a Warner Brother talent scout and director of screen tests, and finally a feature film director. From 1937 onwards he directed and produced numerous thrillers and light romances, including *The Road to Reno*, *The Fuller Brush Man*, and *Lust for Gold*. He died very unexpectedly of a heart attack at the age of 41 just a few days after this copy was inscribed. The archive at the Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin contains correspondence between Jones and Simon.
