La Loubà re was Louis XIV's envoy to the court of Siam. Before setting out on his mission, he read widely on Siam and its history. This background knowledge, combined with objective observation, makes his book a 'magisterial description' (Lach). He returned to France in 1688 just a month after the Siamese revolution, which saw the overthrow of the pro-French King Narair and ushered in over a hundred years of anti-European policy. L'expédition, composée de cinq navires portant 600 soldats et 14 Jésuites, partit de Brest en Mars 1687 avec l'escadre Vaudricourt pour prendre possession de Bangkok et de Mergui, à « l'invitation » de Phaulkon, alors favori du roi de Siam, le premier tome est composé de 3 parties décrivant le pays, les murs, les institutions, la religion, le gouvernement, l'industrie et le commerce, coutumes, costumes, éducation, mariage, sciences, politique, administration, organisation, etc, le second rassemblant des informations traduites ou glanées et dont l'auteur considérait quelles étaient importante pour la compréhension du pays. Ses renseignements ont été confirmés par les relations postérieures. Il est le premier Occidental à faire état du pâli, la langue du bouddhisme theravada, dont il a exposé les fondements. Dans ce livre qui comprend une section sur les mathématiques, Simon de La Loubère introduit aussi pour la première fois dans la langue française le terme « carré magique ». Son Royaume de Siam reste aujourd'hui un ouvrage de référence sur la culture et la civilisation du seul pays de l'Asie du Sud-Est qui ne fut jamais colonisé par une puissance européenne. Chadenat, I, n°345 précise qu'il s'agit de « l'un des meilleurs ouvrages anciens sur ce pays ».
