Zustand: Gut. X, 97 S. Aus der Arbeitsbibliothek von Hans-Joachim Koloss, Kurator der Afrika-Abteilung des Museums für Völkerkunde Berlin. Einband leicht berieben. - The "discovery" of African art is attributed to artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse who, at the turn of the century, began appreciating the unique formal properties of the magnificent objects that were arriving in Paris from France's African colonies. The West's appreciation for African art has grown ever since, reflected in the prices it commands on the international art market. The concept of African "art"objects primarily appreciated for their formal or aesthetic qualitiesis a product of the Western mind. It is important to understand that most of the objects that we identify as African art were not made to sit on pedestals in art museums or galleriesthey were produced to function in a variety of cultural contexts associated with religious, economic, social and political institutions.2 In the process of transforming African material culture into art there has been a tendency to isolate the object in order to focus attention on its aesthetic qualities; in so doing the contexts in which the object was produced and originally used are often overlooked. There is nothing wrong with appreciating the object as art, but all of the things that we have chosen to place on museum pedestals are associated with specific peoples and are expressions of specific cultural institutions. It is critical that we attempt to understand how, when and why these objects were made. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550 Mit zahlreichen Abbildungen. Originalbroschur.
