First and only edition of an educational work with rules and a method for accompaniment for harpsichord, organ or other vocal instruments. It was written and composed to be short and easy to understand, for the use of beginners. The illustrations of musical notation were added to clarify the text and to put the theory into practice. Alberto José Gomes da Silva (ca. 1713?-1795) was a Portuguese classical organist and composer. He is known not especially for the present work, published in Lisbon in 1758, but also for several operas, sonatas for piano, and other musical works. One of his operas was staged in a public theatre ("Teatro da Rua dos Condes") in Lisbon in 1775.The present work stands out in relation to other 18th century works on music theory, as the only known Portuguese publication exclusively devoted to the basso continuo and also as the first work printed in Portugal, to present all major and minor scales of the complete chromatic octave. The rotating inner dial (lacking in the present copy, but supplied in a photocopy) shows the twelve notes of the chromatic scale. So one can turn the inner dial to align any chosen note with the fundamental/octave, and the dial will indicate all notes of the scale for its major and minor keys, for example as an aid to transposition. When one note has two different names depending on the scale, it is labelled with both (for example A flat and G sharp). Very slight signs of wear, without affecting the integrity of the binding. Lacking the rotating inner dial for the engraved dial with the musical keys, with a small ink stain on the title-page, a small hole in pp. 5-6, slight browning of the full-page plates, otherwise in very good condition. The binding shows slight signs of wear but is also generally very good. Alberto José Gomes da Silva (ca. 1713?-1795) foi um organista e compositor clássico português. É conhecido não só pela presente obra, publicada em Lisboa em 1758, mas também por várias óperas, sonatas para piano e outras obras musicais. Uma das suas óperas foi encenada num teatro público ("Teatro da Rua dos Condes") em Lisboa, em 1775. A presente obra destaca-se em relação a outras obras de teoria musical do século XVIII, por ser a única publicação portuguesa conhecida exclusivamente dedicada ao baixo contínuo e também por ser a primeira obra impressa em Portugal, a apresentar todas as escalas maiores e menores da oitava cromática completa. O mostrador interno rotativo (ausente no presente exemplar) mostra as doze notas da escala cromática. Assim, pode-se rodar o mostrador interno para alinhar qualquer nota escolhida com a fundamental/oitava, e o mostrador indicará todas as notas da escala para as suas tonalidades maiores e menores, por exemplo, como auxílio à transposição. Quando uma nota tem dois nomes diferentes consoante a escala, é rotulada com ambos (por exemplo, Lá bemol e Sol sustenido). Ligeiros sinais de desgaste, sem afetar a integridade da encadernação. A encadernação apresenta ligeiros sinais de desgaste, mas está também, de um modo geral, em muito bom estado. O primeiro livro de música portuguesa do século XVIII sobre o baixo contínuo, numa bela encadernação contemporânea. Inocêncio I, 24 e VIII, 23: ? Alberto José Gomes da Silva, que parece ter sido músico de profissão. Compôs e imprimiu em Lisboa no ano de 1758 uma Arte ou Princípios de Musica, com este ou diverso título. Deve ser rara esta obra, porque ainda não a vi, nem tenho dela outra notícia mais que a de acha-la citada por Francisco Ignacio Solano em um dos seus Tratados da mesma arte, que correm impressos. Barbosa não fez menção dela, nem do seu autor. Sem que possa acrescentar circunstancia ou particularidade alguma, que diga respeito à pessoa, tenho a declarar que comprei já no ano de 1865 um exemplar da obra aludida, cujo titulo é: Reg.
