Ha oggettivato opere e azioni e la sua reputazione si basa su una particolare interpretazione del concetto di "scultura". Non vede le sculture come oggetti statici, ma piuttosto come eventi malleabili influenzati dagli elementi e dalle forze fisiche. Nelle mostre Signer presenta oggetti e installazioni come installazioni sperimentali, film e fotografie come testimonianze di azioni, disponendoli in luoghi diversi e sullo sfondo di scenari mutevoli. Ciò che non è stato esposto né pubblicato è la sua collezione di "Reisefotos", che Signer ha scattato durante un periodo di 20 anni ogni volta che si è imbattuto in una situazione particolarmente interessante durante i suoi viaggi.Questa pubblicazione contiene un'ampia selezione di fotografie e presenta un lato finora sconosciuto ma caratteristico del lavoro di Signer. The photographs evidence brief stops at the side of the road and present subjects that fall into two distinct catagories: home-grown fruits, vegetables and other produce for sale, carefully displayed on stools or small tables; and loving memorials of flowers, crosses and wreaths for deceased family members and friends who were road casualties. The similarity between each composition ? the landscape format, the colourful centred arrangement, the consistent distance between photographer and subject - belies a deeper message: the produce suggests sustenance, growth and plenty; while the memorials are a sign of tragedy and grief. Karpaten / Carpathians is thus not only a collection of travel photos, but a reflection of the human need to shape events, and a succinct story of life and death, both realities along the metaphorical road on which we all travel.Questo libro presenta fotografie scattate da Roman Signer durante un viaggio nel 2005 attraverso i Carpazi, in Ucraina e Romania. Le fotografie sono state realizzate durante brevi soste ai lati della strada e presentano due categorie distinte di oggetti: frutta coltivata in casa, verdure e altri prodotti in vendita, accuratamente esposti su sgabelli o piccoli tavoli; e memoriali di fiori, croci e corone per le vittime della strada. La somiglianza tra ogni composizione - il formato del paesaggio, la disposizione colorata al centro, la distanza costante tra il fotografo e l'oggetto - nasconde un messaggio più profondo: i prodotti suggeriscono sostentamento, crescita e abbondanza; mentre i memoriali sono un segno di tragedia e dolore.
