Per Wikipedia, "Fort Amador (Spanish: Fuerte Amador) And Fort Grant Were Former United States Army Bases Built To Protect… The Pacific (Southern) End Of The Panama Canal At Panama Bay. Amador Was The Primary On-Land Site, Lying Below The Bridge Of The Americas. Grant Consisted Of A Series Of Islands Lying Just Offshore, Some Connected To Amador Via A Causeway. Fort Sherman Was The Corresponding Base On The Atlantic (Northern) Side. All Of The Forts Were Turned Over To The Republic Of Panama In 1999, And The Area Is Now A Major Tourist Attraction. The Offshore Islands Had Always Been Considered Excellent Defensive Grounds And Were Long Visited By English Pirates. Sir Francis Drake, Captain Cook, And Henry Morgan All Used Taboga And Perico As Refuges After Raiding Spanish Galleons. It Was Here That Then-Captain Ulysses S. Grant Ended His Cross-Panama March In 1852. During The Construction Of The Panama Canal, Notably The Culebra Cut, Waste Material Was Dumped In A Mangrove Bush Then Known As The "Balboa Dump". As The Work Progressed, The Dump Was Backfilled To Create A Large Breakwater, Which Was Later Extended To The Nearest Of The Offshore Islands, Naos. This Work Was Completed In 1912, And The Military Reservations Were Given Their Official Names That Year. Fort Amador Is Named For Manuel Amador Guerrero, The First President Of Panama, While Fort Grant Was Named To Commemorate Grant's Earlier Crossing To That Point. The Two Forts Initially Claimed Only About 70 Acres (28 Ha) Of Land, But This Expanded Over The Years To Over 344. Amador Was The Primary Infantry And Support Area, And Grew To Include A Rather Prominent "Tank Farm" For Fuel Storage. Grant Was Used Primarily For Naval Defence, And Included A Number Of Large Batteries On The Various Islands. To Supply Them, The Causeway Was Extended To Connect From Naos To The Other Nearby Islands, Culebra, Perico, And Flamenco, All Of Which Had Batteries Of Various Sizes. Grant Also Included The Nearby Unconnected Islands Of San Jose, Panamarca, Changarmi, Tortolita, Torola, Taboga, Cocovieceta, Cocovi, And Venado. Fort Amador Was Initially Armed With Two Batteries, Each Of Two Six Inch Disappearing Guns. Batteries Birnie And Snith, Begun In 1913, Were Completed In 1917. They Remained In Service Until 1943, When The Guns Were Removed, And The Structures Buried. The Area Was Then Used For Housing. 3pp., 4to. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed by Brett-James in pencil at the head of the first page to 'Lt Gen Sir Brian Horrocks' and with one manuscript correction. The letter begins: 'I do want to say how interesting and worthwhile I found the broadcast discussion last Sunday evening about the factors which…make a good division. All that was said was true and most stimulating, but there are a few points which I should like to add. I served for three years with the 5th Indian Division and had the privilege of writing the Division's history after the war.' He discusses the elements of 'common nationality' and 'tradition and reputation'. On the later subject he recalls 'walking into a canteen the day the Division arrived in the Arakan, its arrival a secret still; we had orders to disguise who we were. The officer in charge of the canteen said at once to us: "I don't need to ask who you chaps are. The 5th Indian Division, I reckon." | We looked duly puzzled at this accurate guess, and he went on: "Nobody else out here wears the Africa Star." | I have not forgotten our pride at this incident.' Another factor discussed is 'the contrbution of the Divisional commander himself to the spirit of the Division'. He remarks: 'I have never forgotten the impatient, desperate, and even illegal efforts made by all ranks, British and Indian, to get back to the Division from hospital and reinforcement camp: they felt that the Division was a home from home in a very real sense.' He concludes: 'Speaking personally, I shall always be thankful that a letter came round to the L of C unit I was with in Syria, asking for volunteers to serve with Indian formations in the Middle East. To have fought with any division would have been better than life in a comparative backwater, and to have served in one of the very very few to fight the Italians, Germans and Japanese (I only know of the 9th Australian and the 7th Armoured Brigade who also did, but there were doubtless one or two others) was a source of still greater satisfaction and pride.'.

Above the heading, in manuscript: 'Proof | See letter 1st. October 1812. | These Signals are to commence on 1st January 1813.' The descriptions of the various signals to be made 'By Day' and 'By Night' on the various days (including 'Week Days. Fore or Main Top-Mast Head.') are corrected and completed in manuscript. The day section ends with the note: 'N. B. Where Pendant is not mentioned, Flag is implied.' The following is an example of the 'Night' text, with manuscript parts in square brackets. 'The first Signal [is to be] made [by burning two false fires - which first made] { Answered by [shewing 3 lights of equal height.]' Also: 'The Vessel that is first hailed is to answer ["Bath."] { And the Ship which hailed is to reply { ["Richmond."' Printed at foot of page: 'N. B. The Night Signals are also made use of by the Packets in the Service of the Post-Office.' TWO: Printed form - clearly a proof - on one side of a piece of 31.5 x 19 cm paper. The top corners, previously stuck down, have been cut away, resulting in some loss of text. Printed heading: 'IVATE SIGNALS, to be observed between His Majesty's S and the Post Office Pacquets.' Above this, in manuscript: 'May 1812. To commence 1st. July '. Seven diagrams of signals, hand-coloured in blue and yellow, with the days of the week given in manuscript, followed by a five-line printed note, amended and deleted in manuscript. In manuscript at foot of page: 'See note of 1813'. THREE and FOUR: Covering packets with manuscript inscriptions in ink: one reading 'Signals for Small Vessels | & | Post Office Packets | Cancelled by those Established 26th. of March 1818.', and the other reading 'Post Office Packets | Signals'. Above the second inscription, in pencil: 'Signals for Small Vessels'.

A presentation copy, with a lengthy inscription signed by (Lieutenant-Colonel) James Thyer 'To Mrs Matthews and David From The Officers, NCOs and Men of Signals 8 Aust Div. AIF. "A Tribute", and with the best wishes of the original Commanding Officer of the Unit, and one who stands indebted to the service of so grand a soldier, husband and father. 11 Dec 1950'. A contemporary newspaper review of the book is taped to the front free endpaper. 'It is the story of a unit of men . [whose] members were POWs of the Japanese for three and a half years. Of course, pride of place in the book has been given to Capt. Lionel Matthews, GC, MC, whose name is legendary for the work he did for his fellow POWs, and the tragic circumstances of his death. Capt. Matthews was executed by the Japanese at Kuching in March, 1944. He upheld the traditions of the unit to the last'. The frontispiece reproduces an appealing photograph of Lionel Matthews in uniform, and five preliminary pages, headed 'Portrait of a Hero', are devoted to him.

Issued bimonthly from 1964 to 1966 the 'Signals Newsbulletin' is a series of extraordinary monographic productions and an extraordinary document of the narrow focus of its founders' interests in Kinetic Art. Although intended as a general forum, each issue is focussed on a particular artist and the wider context and repercussions of their oeuvre. Many of the featured artists (see below) were introduced to a British audience first through the pages of 'Signals Newsbulletin'; the beautiful and meticulous production values ensure these documents a lasting importance in the development of London as an international forum for art. The artists detailed predominantly in these seminal documents are the following: Takis (Panayiotis Vassilakis), Sergio de Camargo, Marcello Salvadori, Lygia Clark, Naum Gabo, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Jesús-Rafael Soto and Alejandro Otero. 'In early 1964 Paul Keeler, art critic Guy Brett and artists David Medalla, Gustav Metzger and Marcello Salvadori set up the Centre for Advanced Creative Study in the apartment that Medalla and Keeler were sharing in Cornwall Gardens, South Kensington. Its magazine, Signals Newsbulletin, first published in August of that year and edited by Medalla, was named after a series of tensile sculptures by the Greek artist Takis. Documenting exhibitions and art events, as well as including poetry and essays on science and technology, it was an important forum for the discussion of experimental art, with a special focus on Kinetic art. The group and the gallery became known as Signals London when they moved to a large four-storey building at the corner of Wigmore Street in central London. According to Medalla, Signals was ?dedicated to the adventures of the modern spirit?, and during the two years it was open, it became an influential hub for experimental international artists. It set up a network of artistic exchange between different sites across Europe and Latin America, bringing to London artists including Takis, Sergio de Camargo, Lygia Clark, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Jesús Rafael Soto, Hélio Oiticica, Alejandro Otero, Mira Schendel and Li Yuan-chia.' The issues and their contents are as follows: Vol. 1, No. 2 (September 1964) - atypically this issue is of a wider and more general nature to the remainder with articles by Frank Popper, Alejandro Otero, Sir John Rothenstein (a patron of Signals), a review of Documenta 3, various manifestos by Robin Page and Victor Musgrave and so on. Vol. 1, No. 3 / 4 (October / November 1964) - Devoted to the artist Takis (Takis Vassilakis) after whose work 'Signals' the gallery and bulletin were named, with contributions by Alain Jouffroy, William Burroughs, poems inspired by Takis etc. Vol. 1, No. 5 (December 1964 - January 1065) - Sergio de Camargo. An instruction manual on naval tactics and signals compiled for the Spanish naval high command based on the latest reforms in accordance with the provisions of the navy act of 1802. Parts I and II describe a system of day and night signals in current use, and propose methods of preparing for the most common forms of enemy action encountered both in attack and defence. Part III contains a selection of innovative British and French signals and naval war tactics considered useful for Spanish naval captains. Reference by name is made to Grenier and Amblimont, French naval officers who had recently written on the subject. The engraved folding plates illustrate general naval tactics, sailing orders, and manoeuvres for attack and defence; eleven of the plates represent positions extracted from the works of Grenier (L'Art de guerre sur mer, 1787) and Amblimont (Tactique navale, 1788).
