Buch
London, Trafalgar Square, 1996. 256 pp. Yellowing paper, else very good. Hardcover with (slightly dam.) dustjacket. Young Dawid Sierakowiak was one of more than 60,000 Jews who perished in the urban slave labour camp of the Lodz Ghetto during the Nazi occupation during World War II. His notebooks were found stacked on a stove, ready to be burned for heat. The Ghetto was the longest surviving concentration of Jews in Nazi Europe. The diary comprises a legacy left to humanity by its teenage author. Off mountain climbing and studying Southern Poland during the summer of 1939, Dawid begins his diary with a heady desire to experience life, learn languages and read great literature. He returns home as war breaks out.

Erstausgabe
Orig. Cloth with d.j. 1st edition. 271 pages illustrated with black & white photographs. Hardback with dustjacket. "Dawid Sierakowiak was born in Poland in July 1924. He began his diary when he was fourteen, before the German invasion of Poland, and continued it until April 1943. He and his family were confined to the Lodz Ghetto, where Dawid recorded the deportation of his mother, the death of his father, and the starvation and suffering of all. He died of tuberculosis and starvation in the ghetto on August 8, 1943. He was 19 years old. His younger sister, the last survivor of the family, was deported to Auschwitz in 1944 and presumably died there. Book and dustjacket as new.
