He insists that various forms are already in the Old Testament. His theory, already enunciated by him in Hookes Festschrift and in his Semitic Writing, is still not convincing. One must first recall that symbols of numbers as 3, 7,10, 40, etc., as used in the Bible and elaborated upon by Philo, are not a play on numbers. The biblical roundness of numbers or the symbolic interpretations by Philo are not in the realm of gematria. Let us examine Drivers examples. He makes much of the cipher 318 for Eliezer; "that the number must have been so decided long before any late Midrash, being already in the LXX . Upon examination one finds that 318 is indeed in the Hebrew text, but that the number is a result of a gematria already in the LXX is a fallacy. Driver has painstakingly set forth his refutation of several interpretations presented by me in an analysis of his volume, The Judaean Scrolls. In the main he objects to my dating the Scrolls to the early anti-talmudic, bnai mikra (pre-karaitic) period. His basic argument is that many concepts and phrases common to the (Qumran) Covenanters and Karaites may be derived from lost Jewish works of unknown date. He contends that the principal Scrolls are in substance works of the first century C.E., and are of Zealot origin as based on possible historical allusion. He also maintains that the Zealots and Sicarii were nothing but the extreme wing of the Zadokite party. To argue, as he and others do, that the notions and ideas in the Scrolls were transmitted orally and thus were incorporated later into the known karaitic writings, is untenable.
