Adaptation for the stage of Humphrey Cobb's pacifist novel of the same title inspired by the Souain corporals affair of World War I, during which four corporals were randomly shot by firing squad as an example for their companies. The work was adapted by Stanley Kubrick in 1957 into the film starring Kirk Douglas.
