The main work is a report on the first eight years study of the enquiry of the RHS into the efficacy of the substantial quantities of dung used by market gardeners. A large number of different vegetable crops and a few fruits were grownusing different approaches and each such section shows the details and costs of each approach (generally dung, potash and sodium nitrate in varying combinations and amounts) and the weights of the resulting crops. The aim, the opening says, was to 'ascertain how far and under what conditions nitrate of soda could be used to advantage in market gardening'.
