In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Wie neu. Schutzumschlag. 1. Auflage. First edition, still shrink-wrapped, of this monumental and authoritative catalogue raisonné devoted to the lifetime print production of Kawase Hasui, widely regarded as the leading landscape artist of modern Japanese woodblock printing. Conceived as the definitive reference on Hasui's work, the publication presents the most comprehensive survey of his printed oeuvre and has become an essential resource for collectors, scholars, and institutions. Hasui (1883-1957) worked closely with the influential publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, whose publishing house played a central role in the development of the Shin-hanga ("New Prints") movement. This revival of traditional Ukiyo-e techniques brought Japanese woodblock printing to a modern international audience during the early twentieth century. Hasui's quietly lyrical landscapes - snow-covered villages, rain-swept streets, tranquil temples, and luminous evening scenes - combine classical Japanese aesthetics with a remarkable sensitivity to atmosphere and light. The work is enriched by an introductory essay by Kendall H. Brown, based on extensive research in Japan and interviews with the Watanabe family, offering important insight into Hasui's artistic development and working methods. A further essay by Watanabe Shōichirō, grandson of the original publisher and head of the Watanabe Print Shop, provides valuable background on the collaboration between artist and publisher and sheds light on the production history of the prints. Each print is reproduced in colour and accompanied by detailed technical notes and scholarly commentary, in part drawing upon excerpts from Hasui's diaries. The catalogue also includes extensive appendices documenting signature forms and publisher seals, together with a comprehensive bibliography - making the work an indispensable reference for identifying impressions and understanding the publishing history of Hasui's prints. In recognition of his artistic achievements, Hasui was designated a Living National Treasure of Japan in 1956, the year before his death. Two volumes. Large quarto (31.3 x 25.7 cm). Text in English. Profusely illustrated with 670 colour reproductions of prints, 20 watercolours, and 100 black-and-white illustrations. Original publisher's cloth with illustrated dust jacket. Housed in the publisher's slipcase. A fine copy, still sealed in the original shrink-wrap, of this definitive catalogue of one of the most celebrated masters of twentieth-century Japanese printmaking. Owing to the size and weight of this two-volume set, additional postage charges may apply. …
