Controversial nomenclatural opinions concerning species of the genus Metula H. Adams & A. Adams, 1853 of the Colubrariidae are briefly reviewed. Metula metula (Hinds, 1844) and Metula mitrella (Adams & Reeve, 1850) are clarified as two distinct valid species and Metula hindsi (H. Adams & A. Adams, 1858) is a synonym of M. metula. Axifex n. gen. and Cyclimetula n. gen., Colubraria acroincisa n. sp., C. ralliserra n. sp., Axifex retis n. sp., Metula agaoensis n. sp., M. mozambicana n. sp., M. eureka n. sp., Cyclimetula hsui n. sp. and C. altior n. sp. are described.
