With illustrations and plans depicting the Parish of St James and Westminster, specifically the South and North of Piccadilly. The first editions of all volumes. Being five volumes when including the very scarce plan pocket volume, which is present. With a coloured frontispiece to all volumes. This set comprises of volumes XXIX, XXX, XXXI and XXXII of 'The Survey of London'. These are; Part I: St James Westminster, South of Piccadilly, Volumes I and II; and Part II: St James Westminster, North of Piccadilly, Volumes I and II. All four volumes are edited by F H W Sheppard. Volume XXXII has the original dustwrapper. Collated, with 86 in-text figures across volumes XXIX and XXX as well as 79 in-text figures across volumes XXXI and XXXII. With 277 plates to volume XXX. With 159 plates to volume XXXII. Volume XXXII has a folding plan to the rear as called for. With the plan pocket for volumes XXIX and XXX with the four plans inserted, and in a bright and clean condition. 'The Survey of London' was a project that was founded in 1894 by Charles Robert Ashbee. He wished to record and preserve London's ancient monuments with a comprehensive architectural survey. Volumes of this work are still produced today, with volumes 51 and 52 appearing in 2017. The editor of this work is Francis Sheppard, who was the first general editor of 'the Survey of London'. He was key in transforming the periodical from a 'selective record of London's historic buildings, area by area, into a model of urban topographical writing' (Saint, The Guardian). A lovely example of this comprehensive topographical guide to London. A useful, and beautifully produced resource. In full cloth bindings. All except volume XXXII are lacking the original dustwrapper. Externally, smart. Light rubbing to the extremities and to the head and tail of spines. Patches of rubbing to boards of volume XXXI. Dustwrapper to volume XXXII is sunned to the spine, with just some minor shelfwear to the joints and to the head and tail of spine. Some chips to the head and tail of joints to the flyleaves. Small amount of loss to the head and tail of spine of dustwrapper. Stamp for the greater London Council Public Information Centre to the half-title of volume XXXI and for the Illustrated London News Editorial library to the the front endpaper of volume XXXII. Internally, firmly bound. Lacking the 'Plan Pocket' belonging to volumes XXIX and XXX. Pages are bright with just the odd spots. Very Good Indeed. book.

Very scarce, limited to an unknown number, this copy numbered 151.Illustrated with a photographic frontispiece, seven photographic plates, and some in-text graphs and diagrams.Collated, complete.This 1935 expedition Cave Diving Group was a pioneering exploration of the Wookey Hole Caves, the first successful Cave Diving expedition in Britain.The cave dive was undertaken by Jack Sheppard and Graham Balcombe, who both contributed to this faithful log recounting their expedition.This log provides a scientific and vivid description of the diver's exploration. The text includes their observations on each day, what they discovered, and an interesting note on the text of the expedition.Wookey Hole Caves have been used by humans for around 45,000 years, with Palaeolithic tools and fossilised animals found in them, and evidence of occupation of the caves from the Stone and Iron Age and into Roman Britain.With a foreword by Herbert Balch. Balch was an important archaeologist who explored the caves of Mendip Hills, and pioneered many techniques for modern caving. He led excavations at Wooley from 1904 to 1914. In 1912 he found a 1000 year old skeleton in the caves, which is rumoured to be the legendary Witch of Wookey Hole.Collated from Jisc from a copy held at the University of Cambridge Libraries.
