Brian Shellum is a full-time historian with a focus on the Buffalo Soldiers, military attachés, and military intelligence history. He retired from government service in 2015 after serving as a senior intelligence officer with the Department of Defense in the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization. Prior to that, he served as a government historian at the Defense Intelligence Agency for 12 years. Shellum retired from the U.S. Army in 1994. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, holds a graduate degree from Campbell University, and studied at the University of Bonn. His military decorations include the Bronze Star Medal and the Order of St. George. Brian Shellum's publications at the Defense Intelligence Agency include Defense Intelligence Support in the Gulf War: A Chronology, At the Creation, 1961-1965: Origination Documents of the Defense Intelligence Agency, and a number of classified studies and histories. He published a book on Charles Young, the third Black graduate of West Point, titled Black Cadet in a White Bastion: Charles Young at West Point. His second book on Young, Black Officer in a Buffalo Soldier Regiment: The Military Career of Charles Young, was published in 2010. The town of Skagway was born in 1897 after its population quintupled in under a year due to the Klondike Gold Rush. Balanced on the edge of anarchy, the U.S. Army stationed Company L, a unit of Buffalo Soldiers, there near the end of the Gold Rush. Buffalo Soldiers in Alaska tells the story of these African American soldiers who kept the peace during a volatile period in America's resource-rich North. It is a fascinating tale that features white officers and Black soldiers safeguarding U.S. territory, supporting the civil authorities, protecting Native Americans, fighting natural disasters, and serving proudly in America's last frontier. Despite the discipline and contributions of soldiers who served honorably, Skagway exhibited the era's persistent racism and maintained a clear color line. However, these Black Regulars carried out their complex and sometimes contradictory mission with a combination of professionalism and restraint that earned the grudging respect of the independently minded citizens of Alaska. The company used the popular sport of baseball to connect with the white citizens of Skagway and in the process gained some measure of acceptance. Though the soldiers left little trace in Skagway, a few remained after their enlistments and achieved success and recognition after settling in other parts of Alaska. Existing regiments were expanded during the Spanish-American War and the 24th Infantry received African American veterans of the fighting in Cuba. Company L was created from a combination of these combat veterans; they were soldiers who enlisted but did not get the opportunity to serve overseas and they were the long-term veteran soldiers of the Indian Wars. Company L was sent to relieve a company on duty in Alaska so that it could join the rest of its regiment before departing to deal with the insurgents. The commander, Capt. Hovey, had the difficult task of maintaining U.S. sovereignty over the area because the proper border between British territory in Canada and Alaska had never been established. It didn't help that many of the prospectors were American and could be turned back by North-West Mounted Police or that British prospectors were using a U.S. port to get to British territory. Hovey had to prevent any kind of an international incident. Hovey was fortunate to have a well-disciplined company to accomplish his mission. The Buffalo Soldiers,
