Including 6 books in 2 volumes. Volume I: Book 1 and 2 pp270, book 3 pp196 this volume is complete with folding map of ancient Sicily in lovely condition. Volume II: Books 4 and 5, pp304. Volume III contains book 6 "never before printed, by another hand" pp93 complete with foldout map of ancient Greece again in lovely condition. Both vols contemporary full calf binding with gilt lettering to spine. Vol I, some shelf wear to top of spine, splitting down edge of spine with leather strip over bottom of spine. Some age marks and wear on spine and rubbing/fading to gilt. Tiny sign of intrepid book worm. Vol II, same condition as above, although spine has separated somewhat from front board and leather on front board his lifted a little , but binding holding nicely. Assumed same intrepid book worm has left tiny hole through all pages. Inside contents of both volumes are in incredibly good condition with only slight aging to pages considering age. Small 4to, pp. 40; last page dust-soiled and a little stained; disbound. Presumably the third edition (although not thus stated); preceded by two printings of the same text, both printed in 1680, one with the imprint of Anne Godbid, the other 'printed for the author'. This third printing, also 1680, adds an 8-page section entitled The interest of Tanger, by another hand. Sir Henry Sheeres (d. 1710) was a military engineer and writer. In 1666 he accompanied Edward Montagu to Spain in a diplomatic role; on his return in 1668 he became friendly with Samuel Pepys, who took a strong liking to him. However, the relationship cooled when Sheeres made inappropriate advances to Pepys's wife. Sheeres then left for Tangier in 1669 and lived there working as an engineer for fourteen years. 'He hastened to England in 1684 in order to defend, at court, George Legge, baron Dartmouth, the admiral at Tangier, against accusations of peculation. Aided by Pepys, he was successful in this task, and thereby permanently established himself in Dartmouth's favour' (Old DNB). Sheeres also published translations of Polybius and Lucian, a scientific work on the 'Certainty and Causes of the Earth's Motion' (Sheeres was a member of the Royal Society), and a Discourse on the Mediterranean, 1703; he also edited two pamphlets by Walter Raleigh, and wrote a poem which was prefixed to Southerne's Oronooko, 1696.
