Die Duttons sind ein altes englisches Adelsgeschlecht, seit 1784 Barone Sh…erborne. Wahrscheinlich einem nicht-titulierten Familienmitglied (vermutlich John Thomas Dutton, 18101884, Hinton-Ampner-Zweig) zuzuordnen. - Nur der Registerband. - Einband bereiben und bestoßen. Stellenweise etwas stockfleckig. Sonst gut erhaltenes Exemplar. * Bookplate of Thomas Dutton bearing the armorials of the Dutton family of Sherborne (motto: Servabo fidem "I will keep faith"). The Duttons are an old English noble family, created Barons Sherborne in 1784. Likely attributable to a non-titled member of the family (probably John Thomas Dutton, 18101884, Hinton Ampner branch). - Only the index volume. Binding rubbed and bumped. Occasional foxing. Otherwise a well-preserved copy.

Artwork by Mrs Griffith.This detailled natural-history series was commenced by prominent zoologist George Kearsley Shaw before his death in 1813. The work was then continued by naturalist James Francis Stephens. First published in 1800, the complete collection spans sixteen volumes. In publisher's original paper-covered boards. Bookplate of Shrewsbury Library to front paste downs. Externally, suffering from bumping and rubbing with the spines of the three hardbacks severely chipped and peeling. Several small chips to boards and all copies feature moderate marking and discolouration. Two cloth copies in slightly better condition with less loss of cloth but still suffering from the same shelf wear. Internally, generally firmly bound. Boards of all hardback editions particularly fragile with the board of the final volume almost entirely loose. Stamp of Shrewsbury Library to title pages and plates. Relatively bright and clean examples with light sporadic spotting throughout, heavier to first and last few pages. Good Only. Mrs Griffith (illustrator). book.

Occasional off-setting of images and minor foxing as usual, but the images and text are generally clean and bright. The General Zoology was begun in 1800 by Shaw, who died shortly after finishing Volume VIII in about 1812. The Birds, or Aves, portion of the Zoology was completed by Stephens (Blainville completed the section on mollusca and Leach, who also acted as general superintendent, the section on crustacea). While these seven volumes do not comprise the complete Birds section of the General Zoology, the collection comprises more than 240 handsome b & w copperplate engravings by the artful Mrs. Griffith (not the first but one of the busiest early female engravers and illustrators), the text blocks give every indication the volumes have not yet been opened, and the new bindings, neatly done in fancy marbled papers and contrasting cloths, make this an attractive collection indeed.

Approximately 150 full-page engravings (one coloured) of birds by Mrs. Griffiths in decorative calf bindings by J. & J. Haddock. Stephens undertook to complete the ornithology section of the work upon Shaw's death in 1812. Marble e…dges and endpapers. Some browning, stains on covers, off-setting-- otherwise tight, clean volumes with descriptions of hundreds of exotic and common birds.
