Original publisher's yellow illustrated boards lettered red and black, Lacks backstrip / spine, faint wear o/w used good copy with clean text. A so-so copy of a rather rare and very odd book.It came out in American in the same year priced at $1 and received this review in Time Magazine 20 November ".staggering clinical experiment, in which English Psychologist K. O. Newman acted as his own guinea pig, is recorded. Moreover, Newman saw the playÑTerence RattiganÕs Flare PathÑat successive performances, always sitting in the same third-row aisle seat. NewmanÕs reason was Òto find out things never noticed beforeÓ; his reaction, Òtruly incredible boredom.Ó The most trying period was Òthe latter half of the first 25 performances. Then I got my second wind.Ó Newman learned to sleep open-eyed, but the slightest deviation from the script would wake him up Òwith a jerk.Ó Slight differences in intonation or timing came to be Òminor events.Ó When Newman occasionally slipped out for a breath of air, Òthe actors who resented my continuous presence most . . . objected to my temporary absence even more.Ó The acting, Newman found, was highly intermittent. He noted many missed cues and cases of Òdrying up,Ó found that five times in six weeks one actor failed to show up on the stage on time. Audiences were almost never alert to such real crises, but on the other hand were upset by trifles: their most violent reaction (lasting an entire act) was to an actorÕs inadvertently addressing a commissioned officer as a noncom. Audiences in general, Newman decided, have an Òaverage mental ageÓ of between 16 and 17. Until 1952, it was the only regularly published journal in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. Early on, the Journal published the ethnographic observations of British district officials, whose interest in social anthropology and ethnology was encouraged by their need to find out about the people that they administered. S. N. & R. also regularly published papers on linguistics, archaeology, agricultural practices, the navigability or rivers (and edibility of their fish), the histories of towns and places, big game hunting, sport and a miscellany of other topics.
