Hardcover. Zustand: New. Hindu-Muslim relations have always been an issue of debate in the history of India. Even as long ago as the era of the Moghuls, there were dissensions between the two religious groups. When the British came to India, they took advantage of the situation and according to their policy of 'Divide and Rule' tried to create differences between the Hindus and the Muslims with the help of the Muslim aristocracy which belonged, by and large, to the foreign stock. However, despite incidents like the partition of Bengal in 1905 and the Bihar riots of 1917, there were communal bonds between the two groups. The efforts of Mahatma Gandhi and others in securing the release of pan-Islamic leaders like the Ali Brothers, Azad and Hasrat Mohani further increased the amity between the two groups. It was after 1921 that the unity between the two groups started to appear as if it had been superficial all along. Communal riots became a recurrent feature. It seemed as if the British had got what they wanted at last. The book consists of a detailed history of Hindu-Muslim relations from 1913 to 1925, a period when these two groups were undergoing drastic transformations in their reaction towards each other.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Preface. 1. Introduction. 2. The Western strategy. 3. Junagadh. 5. Jammu and Kashmir. 5. Hyderabad. 6. Communalism in free India. 7. Implementation of pre-fabricated plan. Appendix. Bibliography. Contrary to the general perception that the independence of India and the creation of Pakistan were to meet the long-standing demand of the Congress and the Muslim League, the actual reason that lay behind these two historic developments was the emergence of the Cold War that engulfed the entire Europe soon after the World War II. The lurking fear that India might go the communist way, not only forced Great Britain (a prominent member of the Western Block) to grant independence to India but also to partition the country, so as to keep a foot-hold on the sub-continent, for the protection of her own Indian-ocean interests. To prevent any contiguity of India with the USSR through Kashmir, the Western Block wanted the state of Kashmir to accede to Pakistan. Having failed to get this done, through the efforts of Lord Mountbatten they persuaded Pt. Nehru, of course through Mountbatten, to refer the Kashmir issue to the UNO, when the Indian forces were about to push the Pakistani forces out of the state completely. Consequently, the part of Kashmir contiguous with the U.S.S.R remained with Pakistan. With the aim of keeping India a weak and troubled state, in the case of Hyderabad too the efforts of the Western Block were (of course, through Lord Mountbatten) to keep an independent sovereign Muslim state, friendly to Pakistan, in the heart of India.

Racial difference theory of Stanley rice. 5. Broken men theory of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. 6. Origin of untouchability: a fresh look. 7. Probable date of the origin of untouchability. 8. Epilogue. Appendices, Bibliography. Index. During the course of its search for the origin of untouchability this work studies the origin and development of Hinduism and caste system as well. It also studies various other theories regarding the origin of untouchability. It comes to the conclusion that just as Hinduism and caste system have no founders, mundane or divine, so has untouchability no founder. It was a self evolutionary phenomenon a spontaneous social reaction to the circumstances, through which the society was passing at the time when the untouchability actually emerged. (jacket).

III. Fertility bryoecology perennation and phytogeography of liverworts hornworts and mosses. References. Index. Bryophytes are important model organisms in basic research since they are sound subjects for physiological and biochemical experiments. In the present book entitled Bryophyte Flora of Gujarat (India) a total of 67 species which belong to liverworts hornworts and mosses are described. In addition to the systematics key for the identification of various species are provided with the ecological zonation of the state. The project was funded by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the book will provide the basic information for the students in the field and the researchers for the availability of the materials. Bryoecology and distribution. 6. Fertility perennation and dissemination. Bibliography. Index. Bryophytes are a diverse and distinct group of primitive plants with about 25 000 species distributed the world over making in the second largest group of land plants. They are considered as amphibians of plant kingdom owing to their presence to aquatic and other moist habitats. Bryophytes are characterized by the absence of vascular tissues and having a unique life as Buxbaumia. Though considered as Lilliputains of plant kingdom Bryophytes have achieved the greatest gametophytic diversity. The group includes three distinct lineages viz. liverwots hornwots and mosses. The present study provides the first hand consolidated account of Bryophytes of North Konkan which includes detailed illustration taxonomic account ecology and phytogeographical consideration of 100 species of Bryophytes belonging to 37 genera distributed over 24 families. The North Konkan is characterized by Sandy splits intruding into mud flats and wider creeks close to the sea and by low coastal range separated by longitudinal valleys away from the coast moreover with the Thalghat and Bhorghat gaps in the Sahyadric the North Konkan is actively linked with the vast real western gateway of India. Floristic study of Bryphytes has received little attention in India in general and North Konkan Coast in particular through this groups forms the largest group of land plants in term of species not much attention has been paid of Bryophytes of North Konkan except the work of Dabhade (1966) Menon (1992) Palav (1994) and Patil (1996). 326 pp.
