This is despite the fact that Sardar Patel, the first Home Minister of India, held Savarkar responsible for the murder of the Father of the Nation. In a letter, dated February 27, 1948, to Jawabarlal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India, Patel wrote: 'It was a fanatical wing of the Hindu Mahasabha directly under Savarkar that hatched the conspiracy (to kill Mahatma) and saw it through.' // This book is the outcome of a sincere urge to separate facts from myths and present facts as they unfolded in the history of India's Freedom Struggle. In order to know the real Savarkar, author has mainly relied on original documents available in the archives of Hindu Mahasabha, the RSS, the Government of India and the memoirs of revolutionaries who were in the Cellular Jail with Savarkar. These documents, awfully, show that he not only kept aloof from the Freedom Movement but also openly helped the British war efforts during the World War II at a time when Subhash Chandra Bose was trying to liberate India militarily. Savarkar remained a diehard believer in Casteism, Racism and Imperialism throughout his life. He called it Hindutva. Mosaic of Memories is an autobiography containing a broad sweep of the socio politico economic developments in the territory now constituting Bangladesh from an individual's point of view. The time horizon is roughly the last six decades of the twentieth century. Starting from about the Second World War the chronicles end just at the outset of the 21 Century. The author A.T.M. Shamsul Haque was the Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka on the night of 25 March 1971 and witnessed first hand the brutalities perpetrated on the unarmed Bangalees by the Pakistan Armed Forces. His survival was providential more than once. He is a witness to the developments before and after that dark day. There are intimate details of some of these hitherto unpublished accounts as well as horrendous and hair raising events in this gripping narrative. As the Secretary in charge of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting the author observed the three coups d'etat of 1975 from very close quarters. Information of some interesting behind the scene activities will be found in the book. The author has dealt with the issue of rural development from the experiences he gathered working in the concerned Ministry and in his capacity as Director General of CIRDAP for long eight years. As Chairman Public Administration Reform Commission he has furnished recommendations suitable to our present day needs.
