Französische Ausgabe dieses grundlegenden hermetischen Werkes, seines "Novum lumen chimicum". - Ein Teil dieses bedeutenden Textes stammt von dem Adepten Alexander Setonius, auch Cosmopolites genannt, den Sendivogius, der Legende nach, im Gefängnis in Dresden kennenlernte und daraus befreien konnte. Als Gegenleistung hat Sendivogius von dem kurz danach gestorbenen Setonius eine ansehnliche Portion des Transmutationspulvers erhalten. Einen nachgelassenen handschriftlichen Traktat hat Sendivogius in dem ihm zugeschriebenen "Novum lumen chimicum" herausgegeben. - Name auf Vorsatz. Durchgehend leicht gebräunt. Von einem Kenner der Alchemie intensiv durchgearbeiteter Band mit zahlreichen zeitgenössischen Anmerkungen und alchemistischen Symbolen versehen. Einband restauriert und Vorsätze erneuert. Dernière édition augmentée. Contient les trois traités suivants : I - de la nature en général, où il est parlé du Mercure. II - du Soufre III - du vray Sel des philosophes ainsi qu'avec une pagination séparée la Lettre philosophique d'Antoine Duval. A la fin du premier traité se trouvent l'"Enigme philosophiques aux fils de la Vérité" et le curieux "Dialogue du Mercure, de l'Alchymiste et de la Nature". Les trois traités du Cosmopolite font partie des oeuvres majeures du corpus alchimique. Alexandre Sethon passa sa vie à convaincre de la réalité de l'alchimie. Complètement désintéressé, il alla de villes en villes pour convaincre les plus incrédules en réalisant des transmutations de plomb en or. Sa notoriété fut croissante et il fut appelé à la cour de l'électeur de Saxe, Christian II, où il réalisa une transmutation. L'or obtenu résista à toutes les épreuves. Alors sommé de donner son secret. Sethon refusa, il fut torturé puis emprisonné en vain. Il fut libéré par Michael Sendivogius à qui il donna sa provision de pierre philosophale et ses manuscrits. Il succomba peu de temps après à ses blessures. Après avoir épousé sa veuve, Sendivogius publia les traités de Sethon. Voici le témoignage d'une transmutation réalisée devant les scientifiques Jacob Zwinger et Wolfgang Deinheim (in de Miberali medicina. Argentorati. 1610, retranscrit dans Figuier, "l'Alchimie et les Alchimistes"). « En 1602, écrit le docteur Dienheim, lorsqu'au milieu de l'été je revenais de Rome en Allemagne, je me trouvai à côté d'un homme singulièrement spirituel, petit de taille, mais assez gros, d'un visage coloré, d'un tempérament sanguin, portant une barbe brune taillée à la mode de France. Il était vêtu d'un habit de satin noir et avait pour toute suite un seul domestique, quel'on pouvait distinguer entre tous par ses cheveux rouges et sa barbe de même couleur. Cet homme s'appelait Alexander Sethonius.Il était natif de Molia, dans une île de l'Océan. A Zurich, où le prêtre Tghlin lui donna une lettre pour le docteur Zvinger, nous louâmes un bateau et nous nous rendîmes par eau à Bâle. Quand nous fûmes arrivés dans cette ville, mon compagnon me dit: - « Vous vous rappelez que, dans tout le voyage et sur le bateau. vous avez attaqué l'alchimie et les alchimistes. Vous vous souvenez aussi que je vous ai promis de vous répondre, non par des démonstrations, mais bien par une action philosophique. J'attends encore quelqu'un que je veux convaincre en même temps que vous. afin que les adversaires de l'alchimie cessent leurs doutes sur cet art.» On fut alors chercher le personnage en question, que je connaissais seulement de vue et qui ne demeurait pas loin de notre hôtel. J'appris plus tard que c'était le docteur Jacob Zvinger, dont la famille compte tant de naturalistes célèbres. Nous nous rendîmes tous les trois chez un ouvrier des mines d'or, avec plusieurs plaques de plomb que Zvinger avait emportées de sa maison, un creuset que nous prîmes chez un orfèvre, et du soufre ordinaire que nous achetâmes en chemin. Sethon ne toucha à rien. Il fit faire du feu, ordonna de mettre le plomb et le soufre dans le creuset, de placer le couvercle et d'agiter la masse avec des baguettes. Pendant ce temps, il causait avec nous. Au bout d'un quart d'heure. il nous dit: - « Jetez ce petit papier dans le plomb fondu, mais bien au milieu, et tâchez que rien ne tombe dans le feu!.» Dans ce papier était une poudre assez lourde, d'une couleur qui paraissait jaune-citron ; du reste, il fallait avoir de bons yeux pour la distinguer. Quoique aussi incrédules que saint Thomas lui-même, nous fimes tout ce qui nous était commandé. Après que la masse eut été chauffée environ un quart d'heure encore, et continuellement agitée avec des baguettes de fer, l'orfèvre reçut l'ordre d'éteindre le creuset en répandant de l'eau dessus ; mais il n'y avait plus le moindre vestige de plomb; nous trouvâmes de l'or le plus pur, et qui, d'après l'opinion de l'orfèvre, surpassait même en qualité le bel or de la Hongrie et de l'Arabie. Il pesait tout autant que le plomb, dont il avait pris la place. Nous restâmes stupéfaits d'étonnement ; c'était à peine si nous osions en croire nos yeux. Mais Sethonius, se moquant de nous : -« Maintenant, dit-il, où en êtes-vous avec vos pédanteries ? Vous voyez la vérité du fait, et elle est plus puissante que tout, même que vos sophismes. » - Alors il fit couper un morceau de l'or, et le donna en souvenir à Zvinger. J'en gardai aussi un morceau qui pesait à peu près quatre ducats, et que je conservai en mémoire de cette journée. Quant à vous, incrédules, vous vous moquerez peut-être de ce que j'écris. Mais je vis encore, et je suis un témoin toujours prêt à dire ce que j'ai vu. Mais Zwinger vit encore, il ne se taira pas et rendra témoignage de ce que j'affirme. Sethonius et son domestique vivent encore, ce dernier en Angleterre et le premier en Allemagne, comme on le sait. Je pourrais même dire l'endroit précis où il demeure, s'il n'y avait pas trop d'indiscrétion dans les recherches auxquelles il faudrait se livrer pour savoir ce qui est arrivé à ce grand homme, à ce saint, à ce demi-dieu.» Jacob Zwinger, dont le docteur Dienheim invoque le témoignage, était médecin et professeur à Bâle ; en dehors de ces titres, il jouissait d'une haute réputation de science, et il laissa un nom très respecté dans l'histoire de la médecine allemande. Cet irréprochable témoin mourut de la peste en 1610. Mais, dès l'année 1606, il avait confirmé jusqu'en ses moindres détails le récit de Jean Wolfgang Dienheim,dans une lettre latine qu'Emmanuel Konig, professeur à Bâle, fit imprimer dans ses Ephémérides. La même lettre nous apprend qu'avant de quitter Bâle, Sethon fit un second essai dans la maison de l'orfèvre André Bletz, où il changea en or plusieurs onces de plomb. Quant au morceau d'or qu'.

S?dziwój, otherwise known as Michael Sendivogius, was a Polish alchemist and diplomat who lived a fascinating life in the 16th and 17th century. His groundbreaking alchemical works, which were much valued by the likes of Isaac Newton and Antoine Lavoisier, were milestones on the path to the discovery of oxygen.S?dziwój's most important alchemic conclusion was that air contains a "food of life", a substance that "gives life to everything", which is also contained by saltpeter (potassium nitrate). In his works, amongst others in Treatise on Salt which was written around 1598, one can find proof that S?dziwój knew that saltpetre, in certain conditions, releases this "food of life". This shows that the Pole was the first one to write about the existence of oxygen and also knew how to obtain this element (saltpetre, when heated appropriately, releases oxygen). In his alchemical system this element was called, amongst others, "the food of life" and "the Spirit of the World". Joseph Priestly and Antoine Lavoisier who are usually alternatively credited with discovering oxygen gas in the 1770s both were acquainted with S?dziwój's works. Also Isaac Newton, who was a collector and admirer of S?dziwój's books, was familiar with the Pole's ideas."
