In den Warenkorb12mo bifolium: 4 pp. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper. Begins: 'I am sorry to say that I have to place our affairs in your hands such as I never did before and I hope never to have to do again.' As the recipient may know, 'a vessel was built for me last year by the Messrs Hall in Aberdeen and was built under the inspection of Lloyds surveyor according to a certain specification & contract.' Selkirk 'had so much confidence in the character of the Messrs Hall' that he thought himself 'quite safe with the supervision of the Lloyds surveyor but finding the vessel leaky I had her inspected by the Dockyard people at Malta and they discovered on removing certain planks that the construction of the vessel was essentially defective and not according to the specification & contract'. Selkirk alleges that he has been 'abominably defrauded & sent to sea in a vessel postively unsafe' as a result of 'gross carelessness or [.] collusion between Messrs Hall & the surveyor'. He spent £300 on repairs in Malta, but he cannot keep the vessel '[i]n any shape' and feels that 'Messrs. Hall ought to take her off my hands & give me back my money with such reasonable deduction as might be considered fair for the deterioration by wear & tear for a year - I being allowed also for the Malta dockyard bill as a set off against that'. He does not know how the case stands in 'strict law', but 'considering the awful exposure that an action for fraud would bring about' feels that the shipwrights 'would be anxious to compound at any rate'. Asks the recipient to try and 'privately find out in what mind they are about', and communicate the information to Eden Colville, Fenchurch Buildings, London. 'If they defy us and are in the mind to defend the action we will have to consider how to proceed.' Hall & Co were active between 1790 and 1957. According to one authority 'Alexander Hall died in 1849 leaving his two sons, James and William, to run the business. The brothers were responsible for many famous clippers.'.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Observations on the Present State of the Highlands of Scotland, with a View of the Causes and Probable Consequences of Emigration, by the Earl of Selkirk, 1805. Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, London; 1805. This volume is lacking the main title page, and only has the half title, but through comparison, this is the 1805 first edition. It is stated on the final Appendix page lvi that the book is printed by R. Taylor and Co of London, whereas the second edition of 1906 was printed by Ballantyne of Edinburgh. The second edition also has a slightly different pagination so this is clearly the first printing. A very good hardback with leather spine and corners - would be near fine except for the missing title page. A later rebinding, but not recent. Raised bands and red morocco title label. Some wear to spine leather. Bookplate of Kilberry. Binding tight and secure. Minor age spotting to endpapers and a few pages at extremities, but text is otherwise lovely and clean except for a few pages which have a few marks or spots. There is one spread on which there are relevant annotations in pencil. A handsome volume. Text in English. vii + 223pp + lvi Appendix. Dimensions: Approximately 214mm high x 140mm wide x 20mm deep. Weight: approximately 463g (unpacked weight). More photos on request.

The scarce 2nd edition. (cgc) T.P.L. 767. Gagnon I-3248, (1st). Peel 67. Lande 1440, (1st). "In 1792, Thomas Douglas, 5th Earl of Selkirk, undertook an extensive tour through the Scottish Highlands and became convinced that emigration thence was unavoidable. He also recognized the need of some controlling hand to direct it. He first conceived the idea of a settlement at the Red River (now Winnipeg) but this did not materialize until 1811. The above work was partly written as a defense against various reports which had subsequently been spread concerning his colonization schemes. In it he speaks of the tide of emigration to the U.S.A. and suggests that this emigration might be turned to Canada. He also speaks at length of the success of his settlement at Prince Edward Island, which he had founded when his first attempts at the Red River had not met with success". Lande.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. pp. vii, [1]blank, 223, [1]blank, lvi. with half-title. later quarter morocco (spine rubbed, a few leaves browned). First Edition. The Earl of Selkirk developed a particular concern for the economic plight of the Scottish Highlanders, which was heightened during an extensive tour undertaken in 1792. Convinced that emigration was the only possible solution, he developed colonization schemes centred on Prince Edward Island, Upper Canada, and the Red River (what is now Winnipeg). This work was written partially to defend himself against the numerous slanderous reports as to his motives in promoting colonization. It presents an accurate and clearly written assessment of the political and economic conditions in Scotland at the time, the possibilities offered by Canada, and a fairly lengthy discussion of the successful Scottish settlement at Prince Edward Island.
