Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - There are some types of complex systems that are built like clockwork, with well-defined parts that interact in well-defined ways, so that the action of the whole can be precisely analyzed and anticipated with accuracy and precision. Some systems are not themselves so well-defined, but they can be modeled in ways that are like trained pilots in well-built planes, or electrolyte balance in healthy humans. But there are many systems for which that is not true; and among them are many whose understanding and control we would value. For example, the model for the trained pilot above fails exactly where the pilot is being most human; that is, where he is exercising the highest levels of judgment, or where he is learning and adapting to new conditions. Again, sometimes the kinds of complexity do not lead to easily analyzable models at all; here we might include most economic systems, in all forms of societies. There are several factors that seem to contribute to systems being hard to model, understand, or control. The human participants may act in ways that are so variable or so rich or so interactive that the only adequate model of the system would be the entire system itself, so to speak. This is probably the case in true long term systems involving people learning and growing up in a changing society.

Original brown cloth, gilt (extremities a bit worn with minor loss). First edition. Having had an exemplary Civil War, in the postwar navy, Selfridge taught at the Naval Academy and then "performed notable service on expeditions to map parts of Latin America. Promoted to commander in 1869, he oversaw in the next four years three surveys of Panama for a canal and explored deep into Colombia. His reports, published in 1874, ultimately won for him the Legion of Honor from France and honorary membership in the Royal Geographical Society of Belgium. Four years later he took the gunboat 'Enterprise' on a surveying voyage to the upper Amazon and Madeira rivers. In 1879 he represented the United States at the congress in Paris on interoceanic canals organized by Ferdinand de Lesseps" (Malcolm Muir for ANB). The maps include: The Isthmus of Darien; Napipi and Bojaya Rivers and their tributaries; Napipi and Atrato Rivers (on two sheets); Atrato and Peranchita Rivers, from Columbia Bay to the Divide; Columbia Bay, the Gulf of Darien; Profile of ship-canal, via the Napipi and Doguado Valleys; Profile of the Napipi route, (1871); Tuyra and Cue Rivers; Darien Harbour and Tuyra river; Isthmus of Darien between Caldonia Bay and Gulf of San Miguel; Isthmus of San Blas; Mandinga Harbor, (Gulf of San Blas); Valley of Atrato, (copy of old Spanish Map); Atrato River, from Vejia to Quibdo; Routes of steamers between Cupica Bay and the Asiatic continent.
