Bottom edge of textblock chipped/nibbled (approx. 1 - 2 millimetres). Plates all clean and vibrant. Good condition 24 large colour plates of roses by Pierre Joseph Redouté (1759 - 1840), who has been called the greatest botanical illustrator of all time. The prelininary descriptions of the roses were written by the French botanist Claude-Antoine Thory (1759 - 1827). In her introduction, Eva Mannering writes: "The conditions which made possible a work like "Les Roses" exist no longer, nor do the roses themselves as they are illustrated in this book. They are the fore-runners of the flowers which we know today [.] the ulitmate aim [of the book] [is] to gather within these pages the eternal fragrance of the Rose, to delight lovers of beauty everywhere.".

This is another selection of a further variety of roses, following Ariel Press's publication of "Roses" in 1954. In her introduction, Eva Mannering writes of the mythology and folklore surrounding roses.
