Original-Halbleder, Klein4°.( Astronomy Secchi (1818-1878), director of the observatory at the Collegio Romano, was an important and under-recognized astronomer who engaged in a number of pioneering researches in nineteenth century astronomy and astrophysics. He made important and comprehensive observations of the sun, which he began studying in 1851. Secchi was particularly interested in sunspots and solar flares, and the beautiful colored plates in this set include many illustrations of a wide variety of solar flares. The text also includes descriptions of many of the instruments he used in his researches. Secchi theorized that solar flares and sunspots probably had more effect on the weather and other natural phenomena on Earth than had previously been thought. Secchi was one of the first to adapt spectroscopy to astronomy in a systematic manner. He was also one of the first to apply the new technique of photography to astronomic use, making several daguerreotypes in the course of his researches during the solar eclipse of 1851). Secchi était particulièrement intéressé par les taches solaires et les éruptions solaires, et les belles planches colorées de cet ensemble comprennent de nombreuses illustrations d'une grande variété d'éruptions solaires. Vol.II : Frotté, dos manquant, intérieur quelque peu taché et roux. Les images chromolithographiques sont bien conservées. L'atlas rare est frotté et cogné, le dos est manquant. Au total, 13 superbes planches en chromolithographie, numérotées de A à H, et 6 planches dépliantes constituant l'atlas à proprement parler. Ces dernières planches, habituellement reliées dans un volume séparé, manquent souvent. En 1864, l'éditeur Jean-Albert Gauthier-Villars (1828-1898) rachète la succession de cette maison fondée en 1790 et lui donne son nom, il publiera principalement des revues et des ouvrages scientifiques tel que celui-ci.
