Kubin's Dance of Death and Other Drawings is a collection of 83 drawings by Austrian expressionist artist Alfred Kubin (1877-1959), centred on the motif of the dance with death (Danse Macabre). The images, sometimes grotesque, sometimes ghostly, reveal Kubin's obsessive fascination with the boundary between life and death, the inexplicable, and the existential images of fear that characterise his work. This 1973 Dover edition includes commentary and a new introduction by Gregor Sebba, and presents a broad spectrum of Kubin's graphic imagination, from macabre figures to symbolic scenes that illuminate the human condition in dark, surrealistic terms. Alfred Kubin (1877-1959) was an Austrian painter and draughtsman whose work is characterised by expressionist imagery, surrealist tendencies and dark symbolism. Kubin's drawings often feature figures grappling with existential fears, nightmarish scenes, and allegorical representations of death and decay. He debuted in the early 20th century and gained recognition in European avant-garde circles for his unique visual style, which combines fantasy and deeply human psychological themes.
