In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. First Edition. Hardback. She;lf wear to top edge of D/J. Browning to edge of back D/J. Using contemporary Britain as a case study, the author seeks to discover, first, what the social sciences have to say about those people - criminals and others - whose conduct is so…cially unacceptable; and second, what can be learned from work in this field which may increase out understanding of the potentialities and the limitations of those sciences generally, The book is in three parts. In the first, the author critically examines, in the light of the findings of numerous researches, both the relation between unacceptable behaviour and exonomic and social status, and the validity of a number of currently popular hypotheses, as, for example, that anti-scial attitudes are due to lack of maternal affection in infancy, or that problem families beget problem families generation after generation. In the second, she discusses the blurring of the line between sickness and sin for which the growth of modern psychiatry is responsible, and considers the effects of this in shaping contemporary attitudes towards unwelcome deviants and contemporary conceptions of social work. In the final section of the work some of the wider methodological implications are explored. Throughout, Barbara Wootton has drawn upon her extensive experience as a magistrate as well as upon her academic knowledge. 400 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
