Schöne Aufnahme der Sabalpalmen am Ufer des Kandy-Sees, daneben zum Größenvergleich ein Einheimischer. - Charles Scowen kam Anfang der 1870er Jahre nach Ceylon, wo er innerhalb weniger Jahre ein erfolgreiches Photostudio aufbaute. "His photographs have been judged technically and compositionally superior to the work of other British photographers working in the area. His prints show the natives at home and at work as well as the natural beauty of the island and its plant species" (National Galleries of Scotland). Zustand: Very good condition. Two impressive large vernacular photographs of Ceylon (Sri Lanka), by the accomplished British photographer who arrived in Sri Lanka in the 1870s and opened studios in Kandy and Colombo. Scowen's images are noted for their strong compositions, good lighting and high quality printing. The first photograph showing an elaborately woven covered cart pulled by two dark bullocks, with villagers standing at the exterior of tile roofed shops, behind. Signed in white in the print, at the lower left. The second image depicting a farmer plowing a field with a pair of bullocks, with an observer standing at the side, and a grove of trees in the background. 11 x 8 3/4", laid down on card stock. Titled in ink below the image in period hand.

Mounted Photograph. Zustand: Very Good. An 8.5 x 11 inch albumen silver salts photograph, pasted onto the original 10 x 14 inch stiff card album leaf, capturing here a circa 1880s entrance view of the Sri Lankan landmark Galle Face Hotel. The Galle Face Hotel - known locally as "The Grand Dame of Colombo" was built in 1864 while Sri Lanka was still known as Ceylon and under British colonial rule. The hotel is still in operation today. The photo is signed "SCOWEN" in negative at the lower left corner. Photo w. minor rubbing and fading to edges ; card mount with some modest waving and toning near edges, verso is blank. An early Scowen photograph of the famous Galle Face Hotel, showing the rich tonality Scowen is known for and with the hotel's name clearly visible in three places. Uncommon to market. Ask about other available 19th c. photos of Ceylon. Charles Thomas Scowen (1852 - 1948) was a British photographer during the nineteenth century. He was active as a photographer from 1871 to 1890, working in Sri Lanka and British India in the early 1870s. By 1876 Scowen had established a studio, Scowen & Co, in Kandy and by the 1890s, he had opened a second in Colombo. His work, which included landscapes and portraits of Malay women, is noted for its lighting, technically superior printing, and strong compositional qualities. Scowen's photographs are represented in the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum, Yale University Art Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Lanckoro ski's Archive Photography of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences. wiki.
