Wonderful full leather Scottish Wheel Binding, tooled all over in gold gilt. Very Good. Contains the 'graduation' thesis of Robert Dundas of Arniston, the younger from the University of Edinburgh. He was educated first at home and at school, and then at the University of Edinburgh. In 1733, he proceeded to Utrecht University, then celebrated for the teaching of Roman law. Lord Dundas (1713-1787) served as Solicitor General for Scotland from 1742 to 1746; as Lord Advocate from 1754 to 1760; and as Member of Parliament for Midlothian from 1754 to 1761. He was Lord President of the Court of Session from 1760 to 1787, losing his popularity for giving his casting vote against Archibald Douglas in the famous Douglas Cause. ESTC T196921. The only examples of this work that we've located are at the Bodleian Library (Oxford) and the Univ. of Texas (though both of these might be microform). I would think Edinburgh Univ. or the National Library would have one but it does not show in the bibliographic records. I paid a small fortune for it in 1994. It is the best executed and preserved authentic Scottish Wheel Binding of the many I've had over the years. [The Douglas Cause was a cause célèbre and legal struggle contested in Great Britain during the 1760s. The main parties were Archibald Douglas (17481827) and James Douglas-Hamilton, 7th Duke of Hamilton (17551769). The affair gripped the nation, leading to death threats and rioting].
