Woolworth's Variety Store, Scranton, Pa." inside the cover. There is also an article about the benefits of such a mercantile at the back of the book. Brown boards w/ a black decorative design and the author's name in a gilt square on spine in very good condition considering its age: usual signs of wear along edges and spine but otherwise the cover is solid. This is a collection of eight pamphlets, tracts and other works, bound in a single volume. The principal piece is 'The Visionary' (Nos. 1, 2, and 3) being political satires first published in the Edinburgh Weekly Journal, and signed Somnambulus [Sir Walter Scott]. The present version includes a preface, and the title-page dated 1819 is present. The full contents of the book, in the order in which they appear, are: An Exposure of the Public Abuses connected with the Ecclesiastical and Civic Arrangements of the City of Edinburgh by William Chambers, No. II., new edition with notes, 1831, 48pp. The Politics of the New Testament, 7th thousand, undated reprint from Tait's Edinburgh Magazine, 16pp. Speech of Rev. John Ritchie delivered at the Complete Suffrage Banquet given in honour of the Scottish Political Martyrs of 1793, 2nd thousand, 1844, 20pp. A Sermon on Self-Inconsitency of Christians in Using or Countenancing the Use of Intoxicating Drinks by Rev. The binding is probably from the late 19th century, and the case of the book is in good to very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling to the boards. the spine ends are bumped with a little damage to the cloth on the spine corners and there is a split in the cloth of about 1 1/2" on the bottom of the front spine edge and a split of about 1" on the bottom rear spine edge. The contents are tight and the pages generally clean with some of the works in the book having some scattered soiling, staining and light foxing. The soiling is mostly noticeable on the first and last pages of some of the works in the book. The frontispiece to the drama 'Rob Roy' has a 1" tear on the fore edge that has an old paper repair on the back and the title-page shows offsetting from the frontispiece.
