Unbound. Zustand: Near Fine. Gelatin silver print. Likely measuring 8" x 10", framed and glazed to 8½" x 10½". Unexamined out of frame, but aside from the ink fading some, the image appears near fine. There is a bit of dirt stuck under the glass, and the frame is modestly rubbed but sound. Inscribed to violinist Frank Siegfried on the image: "To Frank, One of the very few people whose well being I particularly care about. Love, Hazel. Jan 23, 1940." Scott was a well-known Trinidad-born jazz and classical pianist and singer, who in 1950 became one of the first African-Americans to host her own TV show, "The Hazel Scott Show." She was dedicated to Civil Rights and her career faltered in the McCarthy era after her name appeared in *Red Channels* and she voluntarily testified before the HUAC. Scott was married to Congressman Adam Clayton Powell from 1946 to 1960. The recipient of the photograph, Frank Siegfried, had a long career as a violinist. He played at Radio City Music Hall for 10 years, was a member of Artie Shaw's first band, played classical music and worked on Broadway, and played with artists including Billie Holiday, Andy Williams, Della Reese, Sammy Davis Jr., and Sam Cook. Taped to the verso is an undated manuscript note from Siegfried to Hazel Scott on his letterhead: "Dear HazelDid you really mean what you said on this photograph a 'couple' of years ago??? If you did, I'm in the room and I would so very much like for you to join us. Frank." One the verso, someone has written in black ink: "Pianist Hazel Scott, wife of Adam Clayton Powell. Died at a young age (1981)." A very nice image of an important musician, with an intriguing inscription and a nice association.
