I am pleased to offer a large book of photos by the world-famous Swiss photographer Emil Schulthess titled simply: "China". Although the photos in both b&w and color are abundant- beautiful and sometimes stark this book is more than a "picture book." Schulthess or perhaps the publisher Viking have enlisted the aid of other well-known China hands to prepare interesting and informative essays about China at this interesting time as it was just opening to the West after decades of Communist rule. This large and heavy hard cover book (11 ½ x 13 inches 172 pages) was published as a Studio Book by the Viking Press of New York dated 1966 and I believe a First Edition. It is bound in burnt orange cloth with gilt titles in Chinese and English on the cover and spine and protected by a glossy but battered pictorial dust jackett. Condition: This book is in very good condition. I cannot say the same for the dust jacket which although mostly whole has been torn and inexpertly repaired on it edges. The hard covers are clean & bright and unbumped and the gilt titles bold and handsome. Inside the book is unmarked and the pages and plates are bright and clean throughout. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound even for so massive a book. This book is not ex-library or remainder.
