In fine condition. ~ FIRST EDITION. Caspar Jacob Christiaan Reuvens (1793-1835), Dutch Egyptologist. Also known as Caspari Jacobi Christiani Reuvens, Gaspard Jacob Chrétien Reuvens, Casparus Jacobus Christianus Reuvens, and Kaspar Jakob Christian Reuvens. Studied law and classics in Amsterdam and Leiden but became interested in archaeology during a stay in Paris. He was appointed first director of the Leiden Museum of Antiquities and first professor of archaeology in the Netherlands (Leiden University, 1818-1835). It was Reuvens who transformed the mediocre archaeological cabinet of Leiden University to the National Museum of Antiquities of the Netherlands. Backed by King William I, he acquired the successive collections of De Lescluze, Cimba, and Anastasi, as well as numerous classical collections. [Provenance:] From the library of renowned Egyptologist Prof. Dr. Joris Frans Borghouts (1939-2018). 007-3.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: . ~ ~ NOTE: THE PRICE OF THIS BOOK IS CURRENTLY REDUCED! ~ ~ (illustrator). 1st Edition. Three volumes. Royal octavo. Pp. xxv, 367; 276, plus 56 plates of Hieroglyphic texts. With a full-page map to each volume. [AND:] Atlas in REPLICA: Quarto. Contains 79 photographic plates with numerous images to each; 2 charts; 3 plates of text-examples; 23 line-drawn plates with numerous images to each. The two text volumes are in the original illustrated stiff wrappers, bit age toned, one bottom corner dog-eared. In a very good condition, crisp interiors. The Atlas, a privately produced replica of very fine quality, is brand new hardcover. ~ FIRST EDITION. Collections of the National Museum of Antiquities at Leiden, II. [NOTE:] The Plate Volume is a REPLICA. Professionally photographed from the original in a very high resolution and privately produced as a very handsome hardcover book. It is printed throughout on fine 200g acid free, glossy paper which enhances contrast and resolution. The quality is excellent, not even the tiniest detail is lost. Schneider's "Shabtis" was originally presented as a doctoral dissertation to the University of Ghent. It directly became a classic, most authoritative study on the subject: "Fundamental is the study by Hans Schneider. Apart from substantial historical and religio-historical research, he developed a typology in order to make elaborate and repetitive descriptions of the abundant material superfluous. He submitted the collection of the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden to this procedure and made it manageable by means of key pages with outlines of the various types." - Henk Milde, UCLA Encyclopedia of Egyptology. [ADDED:] As it were, Schneider's work was not free from errors which remained uncorrected as no new edition was ever published. Many a scholar took these errors at face value and some confusion and discussion arose. In a privately compiled, typed and circulated among few scholars, a 2-page "Addenda et Corrigenda" lists no less than 46 points of errors or incompleteness, some of them rather severe, almost all in the two text volumes. A copy of this rare list is herewith enclosed. _O-3.
