About The Author -: Franz Anton SchiefnerÊ(1817- 1879) was aÊBaltic GermanÊlinguistÊandÊTibetologist. He was educated first at the Reval grammar school, matriculated atÊSt PetersburgÊas a law student in 1836, and subsequently atÊBerlin, from 1840 to 1842, where he devoted himself exclusively to studies of Eastern languages. On his return to St Petersburg in 1843 he taught classics in the First Grammar School, and soon afterwards received a post in theÊImperial Academy, where in 1852 the cultivation of theÊTibetan languageÊand literature was assigned to him as a special function. From 1860 to 1873 he simultaneously held the professorship of classical languages in theÊSaint Petersburg Roman Catholic Theological Academy. From 1854 until his death he was an extraordinary member of the Imperial Academy. He visitedÊEnglandÊthree times for purposes of research in 1863, 1865 and 1878.Schiefner made his mark in literary research in three directions. Auflage,. 156 Seiten, Illustrationen von Osmo Niemi, Schutzumschlag, Der weise Runensänger Väinämöinen aus dem Lande Kalevala, der "die Geschichten alter Zeiten und den Ursprung aller Dinge" singt, gerät nach Pohjola, in das Nordland. Louhi, die Herrin des Nordlands, will ihn nur dann wieder in die Heimat ziehen lassen, wenn er ihr den Sampo schmiedet, "daß er Mehl auf einer Seite, auf der andern Salz er mahlet, auf der dritten Geld in Fülle". Väinämöinen verspricht ihr, den Schmied Ilmarinen zu senden. Ilmarinen schmiedet den Sampo, und in kurzer Zeit wird das Nordland wohlhabend und mächtig. Da beschheßen Väinämöinen und seine Gefährten Ilmarinen und Lemminkäinen, den Sampo zu rauben. Auf dem offenen Meer kommt es zum Kampf mit den Nordländern. Sie unterliegen, doch der Sampo fällt ins Meer und zerbricht. Seine Splitter begründen den Reichtum von Meer und Land in Kalevala Ein unseliges Schicksal ist Kullervo bestimmt. Seine Sippe wurde von Untamo, dem Bruder seines Vaters, erschlagen. Der Gedanke an Rache beherrscht Kullervo von Kindheit an; er taugt zu keiner sinnvollen Arbeit und bringt allen Menschen, die in seine Nähe kommen, Unheil. So ist er schuld am Tod der schönen Frau Ilmarinens, bei dem er als Hirte arbeitet, und am Freitod seiner Schwester, die er verführt hat. Bevor er sich selbst das Leben nimmt, rächt Kullervo sich an Untamo. Unsere Auswahl, die anläßlich der 150ten Wiederkehr der Erstveröffentlichung des Kalevala erscheint, enthält die Erzählung um den sagenumwobenen Sampo - Sympol für Fruchtbarkeit und Reichtum - und den Bericht von dem tragischen Schicksal Kullervos.
