These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". Robert Cumming Schenck (October 4, 1809 - March 23, 1890) was a Union Army general in the American Civil War, and American diplomatic representative to Brazil and the United Kingdom. He was at both battles of Bull Run and took part in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1862, and the Battle of Cross Keys.
