In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. None (illustrator). First edition. Two uncommon volumes bound as one regarding the infamous murderer and philologist Eugene Aram. The first work regards Aram's trial for the murder of Daniel Clark and the second is a biographical work on Aram. With a plate of 'Ramsgill Near Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire' where Aram was born, tipped in at the front endpapers. It would seem this plate has been taken from a different work. Facsimile frontispiece to 'The trial.' of Aram's handwriting. Colour frontispiece of the school where Aram worked to 'Gleanings'. Eugene Aram has been the subject of many literary productions. He is celebrated by Thomas Hood in the ballad 'The Dream of Eugene Aram' and Edward Bulwer-Lytton wrote a novel on Aram titled 'Eugene Aram' which has since been produced into several silent films. Aram's close friend Daniel Clark, went missing from Knaresborough 1744. Suspicions fell on Aram at the time but there was no sufficient evidence of his involvement. It was not until February 1758 when a skeleton was found in St Robert's Cave Knaresborough that suspicions arose again. Aram was tried for the murder of Clark and was found guilty. The first work to this volume Outlines Aram's criminal trial which led to his condemning to death. It has been edited by Michael John Fryer and is the first edition of this work. 'Gleanings' is by the biographical author Norrisson Scatcherd. It looks at the life of Aram from his earliest days. Scatcherd also wrote the work 'History of Morley'. Prior owner's stamp to the recto of front endpaper, Braithet Llewelyn Fewster. Loosely inserted is a letter penned by his father (noted in pencil to the bottom of the letter 'Copied by Father S J Fewster') which refers to Aram's work as a philologist. It has been copied from a work 'Course for Studying the Languages' and refers to Greek Grammar and Latin Classics. In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, very smart with minor rubbing to the extremities and to the joints. A few light marks to spine. Prior owner's stamp to the recto of front endpaper, 'Braithet Llewelyn Fewster'. Loosely inserted is a letter penned by another member of the Fewster family. Occasional margin annotations by the same hand. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with just the occasional light spots. Very Good Indeed. book.
