This is the second edition of the map, the first having been published by Jefferys in 1762 (with the page number 90; our edition, by contrast, presents the number 40 in the upper right corner). I…t is one of the earliest existing plans of the capital of the island. The map focuses on the harbour's defence system, at a time when the island was disputed between Spain and the United Kingdom. It shows the walled city of San Juan with its various gates: Santiago, San Juan and San Justo. To the north it borders the Fort of La Perla and to the west the Castle of San Felipe del Morro. Further west, near Cabra Island, is the Fortín San Juan de la Cruz, also known as El Cañuelo. On the other side of the city stands Fort San Antonio, protecting the San Antonio Bridge, which connected San Juan with the Island of Puerto Rico. The map is in excellent state of preservation, with a slight discolouration of the paper in the lower right, outside the engraving. -------------------- Raro mapa de San Juan, Puerto Rico, publicado por Sayer y Bennett en 1794. Bennett, Published at the behest of Governor George Pownall, the advertisement clarifies its purpose: "Surveys and Topographical Charts being fit only for a Library, such maps as an Officer may take with him into the Field have been much wanted. The following Collection forms a Portable Atlas of North America, calculated in its Bulk and Price suit the Pockets of Officers of all Ranks." The six maps here represent a distillation of what the British high command saw as the most pertinent topographical information for soldiers and, being issued at the war's outset, provides keen insight into how the British envisioned the war unfolding. As with this copy, the atlas was usually folded down to octavo size. Not quite small enough to fit in a pocket, it was generally carried in a soldier's holster and soon was referred to as the holster atlas. The six maps are: 1. DUNN (Samuel). Also issued as the first separately published map of Lake Champlain, this excellent detailed chart was based on a survey made during the French and Indian War, but not published until the Revolution. The map was issued in two states and is included here in its appropriate (and preferred) second state, illustrating the very first battle fought by the U.S. Navy: the Battle of Valcour Island, which transpired near present-day Plattsburgh, New York. Also included is an inset illustrating America's first naval battle, in which General Benedict Arnold, though forced back down the lake, was able to delay the British attempt to descend to the Hudson for that year. No mention, of course, is made of Ethan Allen's taking of Fort Ticonderoga in 1775. An important collection of Revolutionary-era American maps. This is a 1775 Sayer and Bennett chart of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, compiled from an array of surveys recorded over the preceding 25 years, including the 1763-5 surveys of Captain James Cook. A Closer Look The chart…covers the waters from the mouth of the St. Lawrence River in the northwest to the Strait of Belle-Isle in the northeast, and its southeastern opening into the Atlantic Ocean. It thus depicts the southern coast of Quebec from Sept-îles to Red Bay in Labrador and the west coast of Newfoundland from Green Island to the vicinity of Rencontre West. The west shores of the gulf are charted from Grande-Vallée to Cape Breton Island, detailing Chaleur Bay and the peninsula of Nova Scotia as far around as Beaver Harbour. Within the gulf are charted Anticosti Island, Prince Edward Island (here named Island of Saint John), and Cap-aux Meules (named Magdalen Islands on the chart). The chart is replete with depth soundings, shallows, fishing banks, and navigational notes. Two engraved ships illustrate the typical French routes entering and leaving the St. Lawrence River. The Sources The chart is the result of an initiative by the British Admiralty to better comprehend the coasts and waters that were awarded to Great Britain by the 1763 Treaty of Paris, following the conclusion of the French and Indian War (1754 - 1763). James Cook was promptly sent to survey these waters in April 1763, just two months after the treaty signing - although he already had some familiarity with the region, having taken part in operations against the French there during the war. Sayer and Bennett's map added Cook's surveys - mainly of Labrador and Newfoundland - to an array of preexisting British and French sources, both contemporary and prior to the French and Indian War. Publication History and Census This chart was engraved in 1775 for inclusion in Sayer and Bennett's North American Pilot , the production of which had passed to them following the death of Thomas Jefferys in 1771. The chart appeared in subsequent editions of that work, as well as copies of the American Atlas (later editions of this can be distinguished by the addition of 'Pl. No' in the upper right corner accompanying the Roman numeral appearing here; the earliest are identical to that found in the Pilot . The chart is well represented in institutional collections.
