Its authorship is a matter of dispute. The likely author is Stephen, a notable lawyer and leader of England's anti-slavery movement. Some sources say it is Warren, a barrister who wrote several novels and sketches with legal themes, such as Ten-Thousand a Year (1st. ed., 1841).
