Trata-se de um testemunho, dos muitos que foram publicados na época, do Sismo de Lisboa de 1755. O texto, num estilo de prosa epopeica, retrata bem o acontecimento e a destruição que foi por ele provocada. Após o terrível Sismo de 1755, ordenou o Marquês de Pombal a publicação de um folheto, escrito por um padre, em que se apresentava uma justificação naturalista do fenómeno. Em directo confronto com os ideais difundidos pelo Estado, existia um forte sentimento da culpabilização pelo pecado, que gerava uma outra paisagem, humana e interiorizada de ruína. É nesta última corrente que o presente folhetim se enquadra, atestando a crença de que o desastre fora um castigo de Deus, e afirmando a indispensabilidade da penitência e da compunção ? uma mensagem que produziu uma tomada de consciência generalizada de degradação e ruína moral, criando-se um momento que devia ser aproveitado para a expiação de penas e confissão de culpas. Neste, como em outros aspectos, o jesuíta Gabriel Malagrida é tão-só um caso paradigmático.É interessante notar que Malagrida terá sido desterrado para Setúbal em 1756, sendo provável que o autor tenha mantido algum contacto ele. A unique copy presenting in the colophon the original authorisations for the edition: 'Pode Correr' [can be distributed], and 'Está conforme com o original' [it is in accordance with the original], and also 7 licenses and the respective signatures of the censors. The author states that the 1755 earthquake was not due to natural causes, as was usual at the time and disputed by humanists like Voltaire. Nevertheless, the text in epic prose depicts well the tsunami, its approach and the main places of destruction: 'rebentando a água neste vistoso campo do Bonfim' [the waves hitting this beautiful field of Bonfim]; 'verde negro das ondas' [the greenish black of the waves]; 'nas tuas ruas os barcos, os batéis, e os hiates atravessados com o ímpeto' [on your streets the boats, barges and the yachts dragged by the force of the waves]; etc. Language: Português / Portuguese Location/localizacao: Gravureiro Gav. 8-41.
