Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Wallace Litwin (Jacket rear photograph) (illustrator). The format is approximately 5.75 inches by 8.5 inches. [8], 213, [3] pages. The dust jacket is in a plastic sleeve. Bette Lord is the elder sister of Sansan they endured years of separation during their childhood. Bette Bao Lord (born November 3, 1938) is a Chinese-born American writer and civic activist for human rights and democracy. Lord was born as Bette Bao in Shanghai, China. In 1949 Bette Bao Lord and her family were stranded in the United States when Mao Zedong and his communist rebels won the civil war in China. Bette Bao Lord has written eloquently about her childhood experiences as a Chinese immigrant in the post-World War II United States in her autobiographical children's book In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson. In this book she describes her efforts to learn English and to become accepted by her classmates and how she succeeds with the help of baseball and Jackie Robinson. She earned a B.A. in Political Science at Tufts University in 1959 and a master's degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in 1960. In 1962, as refugees surged into Hong Kong, Bette's mother, Dora Bao, conceived and carried out a plan to get her third daughter, Sansan (Jean Bao) out of the People's Republic of China. Bette's book, Eighth Moon, written with Sansan, tells Sansan's story. Sansan was a bridesmaid at Bette's wedding to Winston Lord, a Foreign Service Officer. President Clinton in 1998 presented her the first Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Human Rights and hailed her as "someone who writes so powerfully about the past and is working so effectively to shape the future". Sansan was four when the Communists took Tientsin. She was seventeen when she left China in 1962. This is her story of the years between: how she lived, what she hated, whom she loved; a sturdy, stubborn girl's true record of an existence none of her readers has ever known. Eighth Moon unfolds through the voice of its central character, Sansan, offering a deeply personal first-person narrative. The story commences as Sansan embarks on a train journey departing Peking station, on her way to meet her biological mother. This journey serves as a catalyst for reflection, prompting Sansan to delve into memories of her childhood spent in China, revealing the intricate facets of her life over the past seventeen years. The authenticity of the narrator's voice, skillfully crafted by Lord, is a hallmark of the book. Built upon extensive interviews with Sansan's sister, the narrative's voice resonates with genuine insight and poignancy. It captures Sansan as both a witness and a participant in her own story, chronicling her experiences within a traditional Chinese family, her educational pursuits, and her evolution into a young woman continually grappling with hunger and nutritional deficiencies. One particularly moving episode recounts how Sansan, unable to afford adequate clothing, resorts to dyeing her undergarments with blue ink to conceal the worn fabric beneath her fraying pants. Even the act of receiving used clothing from her American mother becomes fraught with complexity, as governmental mandates celebrating "the glorious patches" render such garments a potential source of criticism rather than relief. This book examines life in China under Communism; it provides a great deal of insight into the workings of the different programs initiated by the Communists in China in order to create economic stability, increase production, and assume a place as a world power. It graphically shows how the different programs were enacted and how people responded to them. The first changes seem quite slight. The first change is one which everyone feels is good: Young Sansan is delighted to learn that education and school are free. Her parents will no longer have to pay for her education. Then she learns that she must contribute by working on different programs or projects. Although she is reluctant to do so, she begins to work on the first project a project that seems quite easy. All the students build furnaces for the school. Once this task is completed however, the students are assigned eight-hour shifts to man the furnaces. Next they are told they will work in the country during their vacation. After that they learn there is another series of duties that must be performed. Food becomes scarcer. Along with these work projects comes the program of constructive criticism or Young Pioneer meetings where students confess their wrong-doings and accuse others of counterrevolutionary behavior. The portrait Lord paints is one of a country in transition from a feudal way of life to a more modern life. The changes bring fear and privation. Many people are punished for speaking their minds. Some of the punishments are very subtle, some are overt. Punishment ranges from no one speaking to the offender all the way to being sent off to work camps or to prison. First Edition [stated] Presumed first printing.
