Engraved initials and headpieces. Contemporary full mottled calf, gilt spine, red morocco lettering-piece. A defining survival of eighteenth-century colour printing and one of the earliest sustained European attempts to read the Andean quipu. Raimondo di Sangro's "Lettera apologetica", outwardly framed as a defence of Madame de Graffigny's fashionable epistolary novel "Lettres d'une péruvienne" (1747), is in fact the Prince of Sansevero's most elaborate experiment in turning a literary fiction into an antiquarian and semiotic problem; this copy further distinguishes itself by the presence of Umberto Eco's ex-libris. - Di Sangro marshals the quipu, a system of knotted and coloured cords employed in the Inca world for administrative record-keeping, as if it were an alphabetic script, constructing tables of "parole-maestre" and reductions into quipu notation. The three folding plates are the book's visual core, offering an unprecedented, codified repertoire of knots, colours, and cord arrangements, with Quechua terms recorded on two of the plates. - The volume is also a technical showpiece. The polychrome title and the plate printed in red and green advertise di Sangro's personal investment in experimental printing processes, pursued in the basement press of his Palazzo Sansevero and intended to rival the most ambitious typographical effects of the age. Composed in the charged milieu of Bourbon Naples, where erudition, experimental science, and clandestine heterodoxy frequently overlapped, the Lettera's ostensibly antiquarian argument becomes a vehicle for broader cultural critique; contemporaries read its coded gestures as provocative, and the work was placed on the Index of prohibited books in 1752. - Few eighteenth-century books unite material bravura and intellectual audacity so completely: an emblematic artefact of Enlightenment Naples, and a cornerstone for the European reception-history of Andean "writing" systems. - A wide-margined, fresh cop showing only slight marginal spotting and occasional light toning; faint stain to title-page. Lacking two cancellans leaves *117 and 118 (as frequently), affecting a long note (*118 present).
