Zustand: VERY GOOD. First printing. The title page goes on to state "based on the Paul Knutson expedition to Greenland and America in the XlVth Century; commissioned by His Majesty King Magnus Erikson of Norway, Sweden and Skaane; his letter of authority executed at Bergen, October 28th, 1354, by Orm Ostenson, Regent." The last novel by this award winning Canadian author whose work stongly reflects her Icelandic heritage; two of her novels won the Governor General's award and this one received the Ryerson Fiction Award. An epic account of adventure and devotion in the story of the band of nobles and soldiers who were sent to restore Christianity among the reportedly apostate colonists of Greenland. Led by Paul Knudson, they find the Greenland settlement deserted but they continued on into the then uncharted waters of Hudson's Bay. In her preface, Salverson acknowledges the doubts about the authenticity of the Kensington stone (now clearly considered a modern forgery) but she emphasized that the expedition itself cannot be questioned, although this is a novel, not a history. SIGNED on the front free end paper,"Yours for Canadian letters, Laura Goodman Salverson" An association copy of sorts, with an inscription at the bottom of the front endpaper stating that this is from "Auntie Louise (the author's cousin)" and dated Christmas 1954. Publisher's promotional card laid in. 267 pp. Very good in orange cloth in a very good dust jacket (some insect damage to rear endpaper, not affecting the cloth covers, and hidden by the dj flap, overall minor edgewear and rubbing to the dust jacket, but a tight and straight copy, uncommon signed.).
