Services, however, were not yet totally Sharia-compliant. Besides a lack of the necessary infrastructure and trained staff, a commonly accepted definition of what constitutes Sharia-compliance was missing. Even today, opinions differ widely if certain presumably Sharia-compliant financial products really deserve the branding. Nevertheless, a wide array of Islamic financial products ranging from home financing to insurance are nowadays available. Though the industry is currently managing Sharia-compliant assets of USD 895 billion, Islamic finance certainly must still be considered as niche market. However, globalization in general and the flow of funds into Muslim oil producing countries in particular could further strengthen the position of Islamic financial products. In comparison, the concept of joining forces to finance ships dates back to the 16th century. Only few could afford to individually provide all the funds needed to finance an entire vessel. Although financing schemes in the shipping industry have become more sophisticated over the centuries, the basic strategy to put the financial risks on many shoulders has prevailed until today.As this work will point out, sharing risks and rewards along with a strong emphasis on asset-backed financing are the key features of both, Islamic and shipping finance. Therefore, using Islamic financing techniques to fund vessels, at least at first glance, does not seem to be far-fetched. Indeed, a few presumably Sharia-compliant ship financing schemes have been implemented in the past. To my knowledge, however, no scientific research about the expedience of linking Islamic finance to funding ships has been provided yet. Sozio-politisch bedeutet in diesem Zusammenhang, dass die Armee neben militärischen auch politische Aufgaben übernommen sowie in wirtschaftlichen, ideologischen, sozialen und religiösen Belangen involviert war. Diese Arbeit konzentriert sich dabei in erster Linie auf die politische Komponente dieses indonesischen 'Mittelweges'.Zunächst gehe ich dabei auf die grundlegenden theoretischen Konzepte ein, die schließlich in der Dwifungsi-Doktrin mündeten. In den drei darauf folgenden Kapiteln zeichne ich die Expansion des sozio-politischen Einflusses der Armee chronologisch nach und analysiere dabei, welche ausschlaggebenden Ereignisse und Umstände eine Veränderung dieses Einflusses herbeigeführt haben.Im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung stehen demnach folgende Fragestellungen: Aus welchem Selbstverständnis heraus beanspruchte das Militär eine sozio-politische Rolle innerhalb des Staates Wie veränderte sich die sozio-politische Rolle des Militärs über die Jahre hinweg Und welcher Legitimationsgrundlage bediente sich die Armee, um ihre außermilitärischen Tätigkeiten zu rechtfertigen.

Die Armee in Indonesien übernahm seit ihrem Bestehen auch diverse außermilitärische Aufgaben. Dazu gehörten neben politischen, ideologischen, sozialen und religiösen vor allem auch wirtschaftliche Belange. Diese Arbeit konzentriert sich dabei in erster Linie auf den Zeitraum vom Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges bis zum Rücktritt Suhartos, da sich der Aufstieg und Fall der so genannten Wirtschaftsoffiziere weitgehend auf diesen Zeitrahmen eingrenzen lässt.Zunächst stelle ich die Entstehung des Militärs und die daraus resultierende ideologische Grundlage für die sozio-politischen Ambitionen des Militärs dar. Unter diese sozio-politischen Ambitionen fallen auch die wirtschaftlichen Tätigkeiten der Armee. Die Rahmenbedingungen, die zur Formation der indonesischen Streitkräfte nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg geführt haben, sind maßgebend, um die Motivation der Armee in der Folge auch außermilitärische Aufgaben wahrzunehmen, verstehen zu können.In den zwei darauf folgenden Kapiteln stelle ich die Entwicklung der ökonomischen Aktivitäten des Militärs während der Orde Lama unter Sukarno und während der Orde Baru unter Suharto dar.Abschließend gebe ich an Hand der Fallbeispiele Pertamina und Bulog einen konkreten Einblick in die Verwicklung des Militärs in die Wirtschaft. Durch diese Beispiele werden auch die Beweggründe der Offiziere und oftmals daraus resultierenden Konsequenzen solch einer Verwicklung verdeutlicht.
