Hardcover. Zustand: Poor. Vols. 3 and 4 (of originally a 4 vol. set), these two volumes in ONE book, printed in Ireland in 1793, is in Poor condition, being in appalling shape: cover leather is practically all-eaten away by ancient silverfish, and those hellish creatures have long ago bored into the spine leaving a deep depression; portion of the top spine is gone (see our photo); front cover literally hangs by a thread; former bookplate of one of the famous O'Grady's of Kilballyowen, pasted to front fixed endpaper (now beginning to pull away slightly); former O'Grady owner has signed their name in fountain-ink on the title page; interior pages all present, although the bound-side does show the effects of ancient silverfish in places. A glorious ruin of a book, demonstrating what time and unfortunate circumstance can bring. This appears to be the famous Tobias Smollett English translation, and the publisher has mis-identified T. Smollett as Thomas Smollett. Again this is only the last two volumes (bound as one) of the set. Only one illustration: the frontispiece. Fiction. French. Novel. Classics. DB.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. A popular picaresque classic of European literature, The Adventures of Gil Blas of Santillane was originally written in French by Alain-René Lesage and first published between 1715 and 1735. This English translation anonymously issued but long attributed to the celebrated novelist Tobias Smollett helped bring the roguish exploits of Gil Blas to a broad British readership. The work follows its titular hero through a series of vivid misadventures, satirising social pretensions, clerical hypocrisy, and the follies of power. This sixth edition, published circa 1785 in four volumes, is "adorned with cuts" (engravings) and reflects the enduring popularity of the translation during the late 18th century. The Adventures of Gil Blas of Santillane, A New Translation, by the Author of Roderick Random. Adorned with cuts, neatly engraved. In Four Volumes. The Sixth Edition. Author is actually unnamed on the title page, but is Alain Rene La Sage. Also unnamed is the translator - Tobias Smollett. Printed for W. Strahan, J. Rivington, T. Davies, W. Johnnston, T. Longman, W.Nicoll, Richardson and Urquart, G. Robinson, T. Cadell, and R. Baldwin, London. Undated, but believed to be 1785. In 4 volumes complete. The Sixth edition. A good set in full contemporary speckled calf leather bindings, with gilt ruled spine and red morocco labels with gilt titles (missing labels on 2 volumes). Volume numbers on spine now just blind impressions. Covers with light wear and bumping and some rubbing to joints, but a soundly bound complete set. Text is bright and clean throughout with attractive engraved plates. Some mild offset marks to endpapers. Some previous owner's inscriptions to endpapers/titles. A few minor age flaws - last 2 pages of Vol II nibbled to top corners and with a 3cm hole to the final text page. Also with library stamp. Vol I missing a title page and does not have pages v-viii in the prelims. One detached (but present) plate in Vol III. Vol. I: Frontispiece + iii-iv + ix-xii + 312pp; Vo. Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. 3 vols.: xi, 388; vii, 375; viii, 398 p. 23 cm. Each volume has frontispiece + 9 plates for a total of 30. Half leather with marbled paper boards. Respined with gold trim and black and burgundy spine labels. Corners and edges worn, some rubbing to boards. Foxing. Tissue guards present. Tobias Smollett, in the preface to his first novel, The Adventures of Roderick Random (1748), acknowledges the influence of Le Sage's L'Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane on his work. By far the most successful of "useful and entertaining" romances, Smollett writes, Gil Blas describes "the knavery and foibles of life, with infinite humour and sagacity." "The following sheets," he adds significantly, "I have modeled on his plan." Smollett's translation of Gil Blas appeared nine months after the publication of Roderick Random. This chronicle of a merry, philosophical young man whose adventures lead him into all levels of society from the highest to the lowest, presents special problems for a translator. Smollett, without always adhering to the literal expression of the novel's language, is true to its style, spirit, and ideas. After two and a half centuries, his remains the finest translation of this humorous, satiric, and classic French novel.
