Cubberley's report, "Indiana's Structural Features As Revealed By The Drill." Ellwood was a recent graduate of Indiana University as a physicist-turned-geologist. "To show even a very few of these we must have recourse to the geological sections, and the material from which to construct these has been furnished by the gas and oil drills only within the last few years. To show a few of these smaller fields, I have constructed sixteen sections in different directions across Indiana, ." Actually there are 17 striking chromolithographs printed by Burford. David Starr Jordan successfully recommended Cubberley for a science teaching position at a small Baptist college in Indiana, and a little later for a similar position at Vincennes University. After two years as a professor there, at the age of 25, Cubberley was named president of the institution. In 1896, once again thanks to his mentor Jordan, the young college president moved up to become the superintendent of the San Diego public schools. Probably without knowing it at the time and still thinking of himself as a scientist with a particular interest in geology, Cubberley not only changed jobs, he also changed the focus of his professional life from then on. IN FACT, he went on to become, effectively, the Father of American education and School Administrators.
