The political disunity characteristic of Richard II's minority culminated in a major crisis in the 'Wonderful Parliament' of 1386, when the king was threatened with deposition and his leading ministers were dismissed. Of the latter, the chancellor, Michael de la Pole, earl of Suffolk, was impeached by the Commons of dereliction of duty and malversation. Although the official record is relatively full, there has been no detailed scrutiny of the impeachment as a whole. Indeed, most previous histsorians, content to reply upon impressions, have discounted the charges Suffolk faced as unjustified and unworthy. But were they? This study examines the trial afresh, in the context of Richard's reign as a whole, while devoting more attention to events before than after 1386. of its future as well as contemporary significance, however, there can be no doubt. Failing to learn the lesson of 1386, the king and Suffolk brought upon themselves and their associates the disaster which befell in the 'Merciless Parliament' of 1388: a disaster the remembrance of which helped lead the king into courses that resulted in his violent removal in 1399.
