From the Preface Induced breeding and polyculture of carps are well known technologies being extensively adopted on a large scale in almost all parts of the country. The thrust in aquaculture has led to more demand for quality stocking material. Ever increasing demand of quality seed cannot be met by collection of seed from natural resources i.e. rivers canals etc. Many aquaculturists and agencies those were earlier dependant on natural fish seed collection have switched over to artificial fish seed production in recent years. Since the establishment of Pond Culture Division of Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute at Cuttack in 1949 and presently the Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture Bhubaneswar it has made epoch making contributions to R and D in aquaculture in the country. Two major technologies such as induced breeding and composite culture of carps laid the foundations of Indian Aquaculture. The degree of this interdependence is vividly evident in the plant-microbial world. Indeed, there is no axenic plant in nature and one finds various forms of interac tions between these two kingdoms ranging from completely innocuous to obligate parasitic. Most of these interactions are poorly understood at the molecular and physiological levels. Only those few cases for which a molecular picture is emerging are discussed in this volume. With the advent of recombinant DNA technology and the realization that some of these interactions are very beneficial to the host plant, a spate of activity to understand and manipulate these processes is occurring. Microbes interact with plants for nutrition. In spite of the large number of plant-microbe interactions, those microbes that cause harm to the plants (i. e. , cause disease) are very few. It is thus obvious that plants have evolved various defense mechanisms to deal with the microbial world. The mecha nisms for protection are highly diverse and poorly understood. Some pathogens have developed very sophisticated mechanisms to parasitize plants, an excellent example for this being crown gall caused by a soil bac terium, Agrobacterium tumefaciens. A remarkable ingenuity is exhibited by this bacterium to manipulate its host to provide nitrogenous compounds which only this bacterium can catabolize. This is carried out by a direct gene transfer mechanism from bacteria to plants.

From the foreword This account of the family Cyperaceae of north eastern India is the first consolidated account of sedges published in the current century for such a large region spreading over more than 250 000 sq. km and covering the States of Arunachal Pradesh Assam Manipur Meghalaya Mizoram Nagaland and Tripura. A reasonably full account of dicotyledonous plants of this region was published about fifty years ago by Kanjilal and others and of the grasses by Bor in 1940. Accounts of several monocotyledonous families were published during the last two decades but some families still remained unworked. The present work will therefore fill a gap in the knowledge of monocotyledonous flora of the area. Cyperaceae is one of the larger families in our country and the present publication dealing with 173 species covers about per cent of the total Indian taxa which are estimated at 350. 100 pp.
