Whether spurred by religious images or history books, hardly a day goes by in South Asia without an accusation of blasphemy. What accounts for the sharp rise in religious offense, and why it is observable across religious and political differences? An interdisciplinary study of this trend, Outrage brings together researchers in anthropology, religious studies, and South Asian studies with rich experience in the varied ways religion and politics intersect in this region. Each chapter focuses on a recent case of alleged blasphemy or desecration in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar, unpacking the religious sensitivities and political concerns. Collectively, the chapters explore common denominators across national and religious differences, such as the introduction of social media and smartphones, the possible political gains of initiating blasphemy accusations, and the growing self-assertion of marginal communities.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. Mafia has become an indigenous term in the Indian subcontinent. Like Italian mobsters, the South Asian gangster politicians and violent entrepreneurs are known for inflicting brutal violence while simultaneously upholding vigilante justice inspiring fear and fantasy. But the term also refers to the diffuse spheres of crime, business and politics operating within a shadow world that is popularly referred to as the rule of the mafia, or Mafia Raj . Through intimate stories of the lives of powerful and aspiring bosses in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh a rookie neta from Dhaka, a selfstyled leader of the poor in Punjab, a henchman from Chittoor, smalltime brokers in Lahore, a female don in western UP, a political bigshot in Nawabganj, and a legendary figure in the bloodridden politics of South India this book illustrates their personal struggles for sovereignty on their move up the ladder of success. Ethnographically tracing the distinctive cultural milieu that such stories emerge from, the authors theorize what they call the art of bossing , providing nuanced ideas about crime, corruption and the lure of the strongman across the world.

It underscores the importance of academic collaboration between scholars of religion, anthropology, and history in uncovering the structures of thinking and action that make politics work. The volume weaves important discussions around sovereignty in modern South Asian history with debates elsewhere on the world map. South Asia's colonial history - especially India's twentieth-century emergence as the world's largest democracy - has made the subcontinent a critical arena for thinking about how transformations and continuities in conceptions of sovereignty provide a vital frame for tracking shifts in political order. The chapters deal with themes such as sovereignty, kingship, democracy, governance, reason, people, nation, colonialism, rule of law, courts, autonomy, and authority, especially within the context of India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. The book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers in politics, ideology, religion, sociology, history, and political culture, as well as the informed reader interested in South Asian studies.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Against the backdrop of rising authoritarianism, this open access edited volume investigates how states small and large, strong and weak silence critics across borders. This focus on transnational authoritarianism is underexplored in scholarship, and even more so for states in South and Southeast Asia which many of our cases draw from. While NGO reports, including those by Freedom House, have exposed physical attacks, they rarely address subtler methods used to target exiles. Drawing on analyses and interviews with those directly familiar with these dynamics, the collection examines tactics such as digital surveillance, emotional blackmail, enforced family isolation, psychological harassment, imprisonment of relatives on fabricated charges, and harassment of family businesses through surprise audits. These non-physical measures can be as effective as physical attacks, yetoften evade media attention. The goal of transnational authoritarianism is clear: silence exiled critics, restrict alternative information, and shape global opinion. This collection reveals the long reach of strongmen regimes and their determination to control narratives at home and abroad.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This edited book investigates how life is affected by the increasingly authoritarian regime in Bangladesh.Earlier a flawed but real electoral democracy, over the last several years Bangladesh has been characterised as a 'hybrid regime' in The Economist's Democracy Index. Today it is a country in which law still rules and leaders are still chosen - but only on paper. The uniqueness of this book is not in defining regime type or investigating trajectories. It is in its efforts to study how these changes affect everyday life. All chapters are based on intimate knowledge of a field, on first-hand experience, and on interviews and ethnography. This book will interest political scientists and scholars of Bangladesh, the Islamic world and beyond, with findings of broad relevance to hybrid regimes.
