Sprekers beschreven hoe fabrikanten dankzij uitbesteding aan gezinnen investeringen en risico?s konden drukken en tegelijk via stuklonen, kwaliteitscontrole en boetes de voorwaarden bepaalden, wat leidde tot een uitgesproken machtsonevenwicht tussen ondernemer en producent. Daarbinnen gingen extreem lage lonen, lange werktijden en onzekere opdrachten hand in hand met het stigma van ?zweetarbeid? De discussies legden tegelijk de grenzen van het model bloot: aan de ene kant de beperkte draagkracht van arbeidersgezinnen en de onmogelijkheid om blijvend productiviteitswinst uit te persen; aan de andere kant de opkomst van regulering en arbeidsinspectie, die het speelveld veranderden. Zo werd thuisarbeid niet alleen geanalyseerd als economisch efficiënte, maar ook sociaal problematische organisatievorm, en groeide de roep om bescherming, rechtvaardiger vergoedingen en publieke waarborgen tegen uitbuiting.
